  • Compresser is turning 16×9 into 3×4. WHY??

I have some HDV footage that I did some work on in compressor. I then exported a quicktime file and brought it into compressor to kick out an m2v file so I can author a DVD. Rather than giving me black bars on the top and bottom, I’m getting a vertical stretch that fills the screen. How do I avoid this?

I tried that. I opened up my prefs and clicked the 16×9 aspect ration button in the MPEG-2SD tab of the encoding section. It’s still squeezing it vertically.

Isn’t HDV anamorphic to begin with? I don’t know.

These problems sometimes crop up for me with DVCPRO-HD. Try using one of the 16:9 encode settings from Compressor.

Ah-ha! I tried doing that earlier, but I was only looking through the DVD export presets. I just had to create a custom 16×9 SD export. Thanks!

In compressor select the desired MPEG 2 (DVD) encoder. In the inspector window go to the filters tab and select Letterbox. Below that select Type = Scale, Position = Center, and Output = 16×9 1.789:1.

Then you can go to the Preview Window, select the encoder in the drop down box at the top left and see the letterbox effect in the side by side comparison.
