  • RS422 switcher/router

Our editing suite presently features a BetaSP deck, and a HDV deck. We are about to add a HD deck. All three decks offer RS422 machine control, but the Kona card only has one RS422 port.

Briefly looking around, Markertek offers a RS422 switcher/router. It’s one of those deals where you hook everything up, and then press a button to select the machine you want to control.

Two question: will this work in a FCP/Kona editing system? If so, can anyone offer any suggestions for a RS422 switcher/router?

    Tim,

Here you go. This works for us.

    https://www.bittree.com/catalog/detail1.cfm?pageID=994

Combines video, audio and RS 422 all in one unit. Unlike some switchers, this is totally “passive” so it’s really quite foolproof.

And, no it doesn’t bother the four Kona 3’s we have attached.

For an economical and perfectly workable solution use an ethernet patch panel.

if you don’t have any routers/switchers yet though, I’d probably go for that one that combines everything together.

I use an RS422 A/B switch with my AJA Io from Ocean Matrix. It works great. There should be switches with three or more positions. I have also used an RS422 patch bay with DB 9f connections on the back and RJ45 connectors on the front (non normaled). I happen to have a used one for sale if you are interested. It has ten patch points. E-mail me from the link on my website if you are interested.

A few months back, Bob Zelin wrote an article or posted in one of the forums about patch panels. Search under the articles or in the Kona forum. It covered both using an ethernet patch panel for RS-422, and audio & video patch panels.

I use the exact model listed in Markertek, and have no problems using it with a Kona LSe. It works perfectly

Markertek has a 6×1 passive switcher right now.

I’m leaning toward something simple like this. We have six different people using our edit suites, and some of these folks are “technically challenged.” I really thin they will get blown away if they have to patch audio, video, and machine control. I would rather they just press a button.

Yeah, same here..and we run in in conjunction with the Ocean Matrix Component Switcher. They run in tandem, so one switch controls component in and RS-422. Less buttons to press, less FU’s

You can use any DB9 switcher, it needn’t be an RS422 one specifically. It’s a simple serial connection, no need for any complex timing or anything – a simple mechanical switch is fine.

You used to be able to find Serial port switches really easily (less so now) – any of them should be fine.

Other wise, using an ethernet patch panel is fine (you can also use them for Firewire, and I’ve even seen them used for balanced audio, although that was a little dubious).
