Actually Gary you gave me a good idea. If it’s device control that’s the culprit then why not use RS422 to control my DSR1500 and DV NTSC 48khz as the input. It seems to work. I can capture to native DV and after exiting log and capture, my NTSC analog output is there without any switching. Thanks.

My original post was not about having two FW decks attached or about capturing to FireWire drives. It was about having a single FW deck or camcorder connected and the AJA Io Hd connected at the same time. Why? So you can alternately choose to capture (by changing Easy Setups) either via the Io for analog sources or via FireWire for DV/DVCam. This is something you can easily do with AJA Kona because it’s a PCI card and not a FireWire device. You simply change Easy Setups and go.
AJA has documented that having Io (the orignal) and a FireWire VCR connected simultaneously results in a device conflict. They suggest a FireWire A/B switch work around. The switch is a cumbersome work around because you cannot switch with FCP running. Doing so causes FCP to crash. This is important to me because I sometimes have projects with DV and Betacam sources. I bring the DV in via FireWire and Betacam via the Io. Also I use the Io as my analog monitor output (to NTSC picture and waveform) so it’s a pain to keep exiting FCP and switching after every DV capture.
The issue is also not about multiple serial devices as only the Io uses serial control. Once switched to the FireWire deck I simply load the Easy Setup for DV/DVCPro and control switches to FireWire.
It all comes back to my original question about the necessity of an A/B FW switch with the Io HD. I’ll pose this question directly to AJA and report back.

Thanks Shane. AJA’s Io HD FAQ says that you can use FireWire drives if you install a FW PCIe card but it says nothing about using tape FW tape machines or camcorders. This is the problem with Io where you can’t capture via FireWIre while the Io is connected, even if if you use a FW PCI card. AJA’s Io solution is to swap 1394 connections or get a FireWire A/B switch. Unfortunately if you swap or switch while FCP is open it will crash. What a pain. While I have an XServe RAID, I have been able to capture to FW drives using the Io without any conflicts.

Does the Io HD play nice with FW 400 devices you might want to capture from in native DV or DV50? I assume it would as the 800 bus should be separate from the 400 bus. My biggest disappointment with Io is its inability to share the 400 bus with decks and camcorders. I get tired of having to exit FCP, switch my FW A/B switch, reopen FCP and choose the appropriate Easy Setup. It would be nice to have both connected and available via Easy Setups as you can with Kona.

I use the the HDV 1080i with Basic FireWire. I sometimes find it helpful to restart FCP if it does not recognize the V1U. Also you should make sure that DV down conversion is not on in the V1.

You can achieve 3:4 letterbox by using Compressor’s Letterbox Filter
View your encoding setting in the inspector . Select tab for Filters (4th from the left) and check the letterbox filter. Set Type = Scale, Position = Center, Output = 16 x 9. In the Geometry tab set the Frame size to your desired output size (eg. 640×480, 320×240, etc.) This works for me.

That’s my point exactly. In a show like Survivor Man, 90% of the show is HDV and it doesn’t matter to the audience. It’s compelling content. By the way add Deadliest Catch to the list of disposable camera shows.

Interestingly enough this season of Survivor Man (Discovery Channel) is shot entirely on HDV. Sometimes content is king and codec is Queen.

I got it last weekend. It appears to fix the problem with two-pass VBR. Looks great.
