An orange bar should playback, but depending on its complexity, it may be stuttery. Make sure you are in dynamic mode and it should do OK. Of course, you’ll have to render these FX before you can output.

Yes, that’s all you need to do. However, once you import the audio mix into PT, all your levels and keyframes will be gone. The new version of Automatic Duck allows you to bring those levels in intact. It’s nice.

So you need a good 3D package? Have a Mac? Maya and Cinema 4D are the most popular with broadcast graphics pros. They integrate with After Effects very well too. Problem with 3D apps? Steep learning curve! Just keep after it. I myself am always trying to learn something new in AE, C4D and Shake. If you want to max out FCP’s FX capability (you’d be surprised), please check out my book.

First of all, you really need to work with a NTSC monitor at all times, if it’s possible. Even a TV set of decent quality can stand in if you don’t have immediate access to one. With FCP 5, this is less necessary as the Canvas playback is looking pretty good these days.The fact that you’re seeing color shifts when titles are up does not sound right at all. I just did a test. When I rendered the effects at Safe RT/High/Full – they looked great – even in the Canvas, especially when the Canvas was at exactly 100%. If you have not rendered at high quality, give that a try.
If that does not help you, you might try trashing your FCP Preferences.

Often, you still have to render graphics to get them to playback smoothly prior to output, even if they’re in RT. I do it for safety anyway.
Maybe try ramping opacity rather than the dissolves. They might be lower overhead.
