Drop shadow problem with text slugs

I’m running FCP 4.1 and am using subtitles with drop shadows in my project. However, the second the text slugs appear, the tint of the entire frame (quite noticeably) changes. This phenomenon does not occur when I turn off the drop shadow (which I do need, as without it, the text does not “stand out” enough from the image it’s superimposed upon).

Note that I am witnessing this effect on a computer monitor and not on a NTSC screen (which I haven’t tried to view the project on yet — is it possible that this a standard problem that only exists on computer monitors? If possible, though, I’d still like to get rid of the colour shift. It’s pretty distracting).

    Thanks in advance,

    Adam

    Adam,
First of all, you really need to work with a NTSC monitor at all times, if it’s possible. Even a TV set of decent quality can stand in if you don’t have immediate access to one. With FCP 5, this is less necessary as the Canvas playback is looking pretty good these days.

The fact that you’re seeing color shifts when titles are up does not sound right at all. I just did a test. When I rendered the effects at Safe RT/High/Full – they looked great – even in the Canvas, especially when the Canvas was at exactly 100%. If you have not rendered at high quality, give that a try.

If that does not help you, you might try trashing your FCP Preferences.

    Cheers….
