Sorry. Nothing beats Trapcode Shine for this. It’s well worth the money and you’ll pay off the plug-in with one gig. $99 is not a lot of money for someone in the business of making videos.

First of all, good luck to you making a film in that part of the world. I’ve been there, and know you don’t have much in the way of resources there. Stay POSITIVE.Secondly, your scenario of capturing to the PowerBook and then transferring them to the External FireWire drive is a good way to go, but you simply MUST use the FireWire cable to use as you edit.
You are going to be forced to use the camcorder AND the FireWire drive in a daisy chain. No way around that, ’cause you simply should NOT be using USB.
I use the same kind of setup: a CHEAP FireWire drive (with 911 Oxford bridge), a CHEAP Canon Camcorder and daisy chain them to my 15″ TiBook with ZERO problems.
My key? Short and discrete clips will never give me trouble. If I capture an entire tape, and make my cuts from that HUGE clip, THEN is when problems begin to pop up.
SO: If you log and capture short and discrete clips, you should not have too much trouble.

I just get the cheapest ones I can find with:
A) Oxford 911 bridge
B) Internal FanFroogle and cheap Chinese manufacturing is your friend. I have found cases that work just fine in the $30 range. Given the right guts it might be even better than your LaCie. I put only the best HDs in my home built FW Drive cases, however.

This happens when you have very large hard drives. Limit Capture Now to 30 minutes and you shouldn’t have any trouble. Overall, it is better to log and capture clips rather than use Capture Now. That way, FCP knows exactly how much space to allocate. With Capture Now, FCP seeks out the entire disk.
Capture Now also breeds laziness in not logging individual clips with logging info. Not the best way to capture for sure and really should only be done as a last resort.

Are you speakers coming out of the Mac or the K2 card? Should be the K2. Audio is downsampled to 44.1 on the built in Mac ports and can cause audio anomalies.

Hey there Pot’na!
You are an editor and wish to work at full res at all times. I can understand your POV, but it is a dirty habit you’ve simply got to break.Do Motion Graphics artists work this way? NO! They preview the hell outta there comps before rendering.
There are a number of ways in which to preview your work before rendering it. RT Extreme architecture is more about previewing than giving you RT w/o rendering, IMHO.
Technique? Preview your comp, then simply move on to the next task you have on the show. When you go get lunch, take a break or walk away for the evening, THEN you start the renders.
