Is there any third party hardware that will allow you to do more realtime effects or faster rendering in FCP? I capture using FW and am running a Dual 2.0 G5 / 2GB RAM / FCP5 and Motion. I’d like it to render faster (wouldn’t we all) my only option seems to me a newer faster machine. Is there anything else out there?

Nope. FCP is all processor based. Only a faster processor will get you faster render times.

Used to be a card called ICE…but only worked with rendering the ICEffects.

Adding memory doesn’t help either. I fully populated the bus with no improvement. The good news is that a full day of rendering will keep you warm. I turned off the heat in my studio and the G5 kept the room warm and cozy.

Thanks Shane, I had kind of thought that was the answer. Looks like a new mac for me. Not all bad – I guess;-)

    You kids.
Why, Shane and I can remember when CoSA took a weekend to render 10 seconds of a single effect on a single layer.

You heard it here: Do not buy a new Macintosh thinking your FCP performance will skyrocket. It won’t. The improvements are incremental, barely perceptible. going from a dual 2g to a quad 2.7g is not going to cut your render time by 50 or 90%. You will be lucky to see it cut by 10-25%. Is that worth the cost of replacing your memory, your PCI cards and reinstalling everything?

And, don’t forget, the new Intel-based Macs are only a year away, although you wouldn’t necessarily want to buy the first generation, the new machines have much more promise when it comes to huge speed bumps in processor-intensive operations like rendering.

And, if you look carefully at products like Motion, Shake and Aperture, they all suggest we are in for a complete revolution in FCP’s interface and image handling pipeline. Macworld? NAB? Who knows? Just don’t buy a new Mac now if you do not need one. However, if your accountant sees tremendous value by capitalizing 2005 expenses, buy two.

Hi guys am facing a major prob. Ihave a dual G5 with FCP5. am trying to capture a 1080i/50i clip shoted in miniDV cassette through SONY’s HDV player via fireware. It actually locks with FCP and the capture window shows the VTR is ready. but when i click capture now then after a while an error message comes ” no video found”. why?? The audio level meter show audio levels. but no video???

    can any one help??

    Thanx in advance

LOL – I know rendering speeds have come a long way – But I want it done now d****it. Anyway thanks for the good advice. A 25% increase in rendering speeds would justify the purchase. It would pay for itself in much less than a year. I am also leary of buying a 1st gen Intel. History shows that it is wise to wait a gen. or two.

    Hey there Pot’na!
You are an editor and wish to work at full res at all times. I can understand your POV, but it is a dirty habit you’ve simply got to break.

Do Motion Graphics artists work this way? NO! They preview the hell outta there comps before rendering.

There are a number of ways in which to preview your work before rendering it. RT Extreme architecture is more about previewing than giving you RT w/o rendering, IMHO.

Technique? Preview your comp, then simply move on to the next task you have on the show. When you go get lunch, take a break or walk away for the evening, THEN you start the renders.

More workflow wins in my book. Please check it out.
