  • Allocating Disk Space-takes a long time and why

Posted by Michelle De long on December 30, 2005 at 8:11 pm

When we are capturing footage in “Capture Now’ mode Final Cut Pro seems to take a long time to begin capturing.

We’ve been able to post pone this from happening by shortening the max capture time but have shortened it all the way now so we are stuck.

Does anyone know what “Allocating Disk Space” exactly means and what to do to prevent this snag? (Other then using batch capture or In & Out

    Points.)

We definitely have the disk space on our HUGE Drive.

This happens when you have very large hard drives. Limit Capture Now to 30 minutes and you shouldn’t have any trouble. Overall, it is better to log and capture clips rather than use Capture Now. That way, FCP knows exactly how much space to allocate. With Capture Now, FCP seeks out the entire disk.

Capture Now also breeds laziness in not logging individual clips with logging info. Not the best way to capture for sure and really should only be done as a last resort.

What version of FCP are you using? This was a problem with 4.5 but much better with 5.0.
