This is very good news indeed!

    Thanks for the updates Luke…

Looking forward to the new developments.

I for one am particularly interested in ProRez for getting our footage out of HDV for editing.

Hopefully Blackmagic will get on board.

Ofcourse this all depends on how ProRez stacks up against DVC Pro HD but something tells me that it will mop the floor with it.

Can’t wait to see some comparisons.

Does this little camera have an HDMI out?

If so you could pick up a Black Magic Intensity card ($300) and digitize that signal to DVC Pro HD or another codec.

  • Some of this depends on what type of cameras & decks (if any) you are using.

    For example:

We are set up to digitize with the JVC br-hd50 deck which has HDMI out. The Black Magic Intensity card is a perfect companion for getting out of HDV and digitizing as DVC Pro HD.

What are you using as a deck?

    Nick,

This is a highly documented problem with FCP and JVC’s implemetation of HDV (although not in this forum yet).

In a nutshell, every time you start/stop the transport during shooting FCP will create a new clip while digitizing. FCP needs a few seconds to close each file GOP so you lose a few seconds on the next start/stop.

If you truly need a window dub then you will need a decklink or kona card. Using the cards you can digitize the whole tape via component (or HDMI with the decklink HD studio).

FCP may improve the workflow with the next release at NAB in a week.

There are other solutions for digitizing the whole tape but you will not get accurate TC for a rebuild.

It looks like they sidestepped the HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray thing!

I was expecting to find a Blu-Ray burner in there.

    HMM.

Switronix prices their batteries below Anton Bauer and IDX but perform just as well. I’ve never heard anyone say anything bad about them. They make batteries for AB and IDX mounts and I’m pretty sure they make the mounts too.

I can’t say yes with absolute certainty because there may be exceptions but in general you are correct. Brands stick with the same lubricants.

Very much so. The workflow depends on which NLE you use for editing. The process is the same is standard DV assuming you have worked with DV before.

There is no difference which is the beauty of HDV cameras- no need for specialized tape. Whatever you do- just make sure to pick one brand/type and stick with it. Different brands have different lubricants which by switching will gunk your tape heads.
