Starts at $4,000 (US) for the Octo Core with 1GB RAM. I’m waiting to see if Apple is shipping or just announcing the new Studio package before ordering. And Leopard is not here yet, so the machines are ready to take advantage of all the changes, but I really want to see the new software.

I agree… at this late date one might as well wait until Leopard ships, so it comes with a copy of Leopard…

I really thought they would redesign the case as well when the 8 core was announced…
not that I dislike the case now; I just thought they’d redesign it!

I think we a another year at least before they redesign the case. I know it wasn’t a total redesign, but it was fairly recently (when they moved to the Xeon) that they added more ports to the front, dual optical drive space, less fans, and more hard drive space on the inside. Though I know it’s happened before, I’d hate for them to redesign the case and loose any of those features just because the basic design is old. For me, they’d have to at least keep all of those major improvements before I’d ever be satisfied with a case redesign.

BTW I thought I remember reading somewhere that the design of these octo-core processors would be close enough in design to the existing quad-core that you could, in theory, replace the quad with the octo. Anyone read that, or was that just a dream?

Personally, I think the current design is really good and I am glad they have just refined the G5 case.

Nope, it’s been done and is easy to do (relatively speaking). They just swap in – no other changes required. This is really not a big deal for Apple – just a different part number.

I Love the case design too. I think it looks not only extremely cool, but also very professional.
