Look in the audio settings – you should be able to set your overall setting, as well as what to do when Avid encounters different sample rates.
I’m not in front of my machine right now, but there should be a transcode (I think it was called something different in the MC) in the clip menu….

No, not if you want avi. Avid recognizes AVI type 1, which has a 2gb file size limit imposed by the OS.
Can you explain your workflow a little more? Why come out of the Avid in to cool edit? Is that how you’re encoding? Is Sorenson not available to you?

Well, I’ll qualify this by saying I’ve not used Avid Free (could be a Cream song…) but I’ve heard from others it’s a great way to learn the interface. Keep in mind you won’t have most of the features (obviously), but it’s a good representation of what Avid is about.
You mentioned you’re on a Macintel – keep in mind Avid software may or may not be certified for that chipset. Do a tour of Avid.com to verify.

You cannot export .avi files larger than 2gb. It’s an OS thing, not an Avid thing. Using a QT reference (as long as your encoding software is on your Avid machine) will give you very good quality – it’s really the quickest way to the highest quality file you can get.

Please post the entire text of the error message. An insufficient source error is just that. Sounds like something else is going on.

Well, first of all, a 16:9 spot is not necessarily HD. As far as graphics, I’d build everything to show in 4:3 (you should have both lines in your safe title / safe action lines.
Until everyone get on the same page, this will be a confusing little bump in the road.

No I don’t think it’s a cruel joke.
An insufficient source error is an operator error – you don’t have enough source material to do what you are trying to do. Imagine a 4″ piece of string (your source media). If you try to lay that 4″ string in a 10″ space, what happens? I suspect you have a mark in AND a mark out on your source, and a mark in and a mark out on your timeline. If you are splicing your material in, take off your mark in/out on your timeline, place your blue position indicator where you want your material to go (taking care to put the position indicator on the FIRST frame of the where you want your splice to be – Avid always splice material in BEFORE the indicator) and splice.
You’ll find the same error if you try to dissolve between cuts where you don’t have enough footage – usually hitting size to fit will take care of the problem.
Avid will not interpolate footage that does not exist (and neither will any other program) – that’s part of the planning process of knowing how much footage you’ll need for your edit session.

First, I would come out of the Avid at 720X480 – no sense in compressing your file twice. I’d also use QT reference – especially if you are encodeing on the same computer. The reference file is a pointer and uses the original OMF files, so you start with a higher quality, especially important with DV. Basically, all your settings coming out of the Avid should be same as source.
There is a filter in Sorenson (depending on which version, it’s either a little wrence at the top of the window or a preset you can create) I set to NOT deinterlace. I’ve had great success with that.
As for the presets, they’re fine – I suspect once you come out of the Avid with a larger file, you’ll see a noticable increase in quality.
