Really frustrating
I’ve been trying to learn Avid by using FreeDV but the whole experience has been frustrating to say the least.
I have the tutorials from the Avid site on my laptop, which is sitting right next to the desktop on which FreeDV is loaded. I also have a book called Avid Made Easy but I’m constantly beset by problems. Two in particular are: 1) I can’t get the splice function to work, and 2) I can’t get a title to work. Both give me an error that that says “insufficient source…” something or other. This error is not explained in either the book or the tutorial…OR the Avid help function.
I finally generated a sequence by dragging and dropping the clips onto the timeline but I can’t get the title to work at all.
Does this thing actually do useful work or is it all a cruel joke?

No I don’t think it’s a cruel joke.
An insufficient source error is an operator error – you don’t have enough source material to do what you are trying to do. Imagine a 4″ piece of string (your source media). If you try to lay that 4″ string in a 10″ space, what happens? I suspect you have a mark in AND a mark out on your source, and a mark in and a mark out on your timeline. If you are splicing your material in, take off your mark in/out on your timeline, place your blue position indicator where you want your material to go (taking care to put the position indicator on the FIRST frame of the where you want your splice to be – Avid always splice material in BEFORE the indicator) and splice.
You’ll find the same error if you try to dissolve between cuts where you don’t have enough footage – usually hitting size to fit will take care of the problem.
Avid will not interpolate footage that does not exist (and neither will any other program) – that’s part of the planning process of knowing how much footage you’ll need for your edit session.

No, just as the tutorial instructed, I marked an IN on the source clip(a title), opened a second video track and marked an IN and an OUT in the sequence where I wanted the clip to appear. The source was significantly longer than the spot I wanted to drop it.

Please post the entire text of the error message. An insufficient source error is just that. Sounds like something else is going on.
