    Problem1:
Avid Xpress Pro will play Audio of source clips / sequences but not the video. The video stays on one frame and the Audio keeps on going. I can move the timeline cursor around and see different frames one at a time, but I can’t see the video when I play.

I noticed someone else having this problem and the suggestion was to make sure nothing was touching the composer window. However, that did not fix my problem. The video will however play through my Canon GL2 attached via FireWire.

    Problem2:
Digital cut doesn’t work. I’ve blacked the first 30 seconds of my tape with my camera, then rewinded it a bit and set Digital cut to come in at 15 seconds and begin dubbing the sequence over to tape. I’ve got the camera set up as a Generic DV NTSC device and it controls it just fine. However, it wouldn’t Dump to tape. I was finally able to get it to dump via digital cut though, but the audio was missing. It was playing through my pc speakers, but not the camera. And again, no video on my monitor, just my camera.

    Problem3:
AXP refuses to export the timeline sequence to any format with success. I’ve tried dumping to .dv, .mov, .mpg and the all keep coming up with choppy frames as if it captured every 60th frame. It’s choppy with no Audio.

    Any help?

    System Details:
    AMD 64bit 3200+
    NVidia GeForce 6800
    2.0 Gigs of RAM
    80 Gigs HDD
    Windows XP Pro SP2
    Avid Xpress Pro v5.2.1
    Canon GL2 (MiniDV)

[P.S.: I know Avid does not support AMD processors. I plan on getting a new Mac G5 as soon as I have enough cash saved up, but I need AXP to work well enough for me to output my demo reel now, not in a month and a half. So if anyone has any solutions about how to makeshift fix these problems, I’d be very appreciative]

    Much Thanks,
    rc

No, Avid doesn’t hate you. It may hate your system, but not you. You seem like a nice person.

Have you tried reinstalling your NVidia drivers as suggested here?:
    https://forums.creativecow.net/cgi-bin/new_read_post.cgi?forumid=45&postid=860078

Finally your camera is not a supported device:
    https://www.avid.com/content/8927/SUPPORTED%20DEVICES%20FOR%20AVID%20EDITOR%20PRODUCTS.pdf

I think the key is your last statement:
[rcmaples] “P.S.: I know Avid does not support AMD processors.”

Have you tried just putting your camera in record and playing your sequence?

As far as exporting your timeline, as much as I love Avid, it does a fairly poor job exporting anything other than Quicktime. I export a QT reference (it’ll be a small file because just references the OMF files – note that you CAN’T take a QT ref file to another machine, because all the references will be broken). I then use another program like Sorenson to encode to whatever format I need.

Post your export settings and we can see if there’s something obvously wrong…

    Here are my export Settings:

    Export as a QT Movie:
    [x]Use Enabled Tracks
    [X] Same as Source
    [x] Use Avid DV Codec

    [x] Video and Audio

    Color Levels
    [x] RGB
    Display Aspect Ratios
    [x] Native Diminsions

    Export as QT Reference:
    [x] Use Enabled Tracks
    [x] Defualts: Digital Mastering
    [x] Flatten Video Tracks
    [x] Fill spaces with black
    [x] Render all video effects
    Display Aspect Ratio: 4:3
    [x] Mixdown Audio Tracks:
    Format: WAVE
    Sample Rate: 48Khz
    Sample bit Depth: 24 bit
    [x] Use Avid DV Codec
    Color Levels:
    [x] RGB

Now, the two pieces of video I have on there are pre-edited files. One is .avi the other is .mov I have no way to change the .avi to a .mov that I have found.. Not and keep any sort of displayable quality on it. But Avid transcoded the AVI on its own when I imported… Well thanks!

Try using native dimensions instead of 4:3 on the AR. Also, use 601/709 instead of RGB. Do you not have Sorenson Squeeze? It should have come witht the software…

I’m confused by your last sentence – please clarify…

    [Jon Zanone] “Q”

The files on my PC I’m trying to edit togethor are different file types. One is an AVI the other is a MOV. When I imported the AVI file Avid transcoded it into a more suitable format on its own. I’ve been fooling with it becuase the AVI file was ripped from a DVD master of mine. It took me nearly a week to get the mpeg2 from the DVD into something suitable for Avid.

I’ll try the new settings when I get home from work tomorrow. Thanks!

I should also mention the obvious – when you look at a interlaced file on your computer, it will look horrible.

    Good news!

I updated my video card drivers and the problems cleared up! Got that useful tip from the Avid Tour that passed through Atlanta last night!

    Thanks for your help!

    Excellent!

For others who might come up on this thread, can you post your solutions?

    Thanks!

Well, I’m running an Nvidia GeForce card with 128 Megs onboard with 2 gigs of ram and the AMD 64bit 3200+ processor. The CPU is not supported by Avid. Luckily I met a guy at the 2006 Avid Tour when it came through Atlanta who told me his entire system was unsupported he reccomended updating my nvidia video card drivers to the latest. He also said that if I had AXP 5.2 or earlier to go with quicktime 6 instead of QT 7.

So I unsintalled QT7, found a DL for QT6 and installed it. DLed and Installed the drivers from NVidia’s website and now it all works well enough.

On the upside I’ve got a QuadCore g5 coming in the mail this week so i’ll be upgrading and updating very soon!

Thanks JZ for all the help!
