Your milage may vary with AMD. I know people use it on their system, but if you run into problems, Avid Tech support can’t help – you are on your own.
In the long run, it’s cheaper to buy a qualified system from a reseller.

My first urge is to say whatever problems you are having are a result of an unqualified machine.
Avid tends to be very picky about the hardware. It may seem like old technology, but an HP8400 is the latest/greatest. If you are a tech-head, then you might be able to get it to work. I’m not, so I can’t suggest spending money on an expensive video card that may or may not fix your problem.
If you are making money with this system, I’d say save your dual-core machine for Doom, and get a system qualified by Avid. You can find the requirements at https://www.avid.com/products/xpresspro/specs.asp#pc

Could be a lot of things… Whats the resoulution of your video? Is your machine certified by Avid?

Try stepping into the effect. You’ll have to put a ‘neutral’ FX on – I like using a subclip or color FX (the color FX has the extra added benefit of holding your video levels to 100IRE). Step into the FX using the small triangle buttons on the bottom left portion of the timeline.

Have you checked your FW cable? Turned on the camera prior to launching the Avid?

From the dumb question but you gotta’ ask file; Do you have audio on the tape?
I’ve had problems with source tapes from VX1000 cameras (they sample audio at 32k – default in Avid is 48k. You can check in the audio settings tab).

I’m not sitting in front of my Avid (and I’m not even sure this is available in the Xpress – I may be thinking Meridian) – there is (was) a color frame setting (again, I don’t remember where it was). It shows up as two green lines and is meant to show what field you were on…. I’ll try to find it tomorrow and post back.
Are you multicamming? How are you synching? If nothing else, I’ve used to tape cases as an emergency clapper…

No. Avid didn’t support right click from the beginning through the Meridian version (12 is the last Meridian upgrade). You can get a mouse with assignable buttons, though.

Don’t.
The system likes having files broken up. Most of your underrun errors are because files are to close together.
I’d defrag the C: drive, but never the media drive.

There is always a great argument about this – I say buy from a reseller, especially if you are making money with your system. Finding a good reseller (if there is a local Avid user group, you might start there) is a start. From there, if anything goes wrong with your system, you have someone to call and fix it.

How much is your time worth when you are troubleshooting with a client sitting there waiting for a product?
Others will post and say how well there Uranium P238 system is, and I’m truly happy for them. Me? I’m not that much of a tech head that I want to spend my days under the hood of an OS trying to figure out why Avid won’t start.
FWIW, I’m running Mac and PC – both crash on occaison, but both are pretty stable. PC usually gets the sexy upgrades first – Mac has stymied development for Avid since FCP hit the streets.
