Great post! I too have been wondering about this – I just bought a 42″ DLP with multiple HDMI & DVI inputs.
A note about plasma: I’ve found that some models buzz at altitude. If you live above, say 6500′, listen very carefully in your megamart display aisle. My wife thought I was nuts when I put my ear up to a prospective model. I’ve also found the bigger the screen, the better chance you have of getting a buzz. And if you live at a higher altitude than the store, AND you have your heart set on plasma, I’d see if you can get a demo at your house. Because it’s REALLY annoying – almost like a flourescent light buzz….

I don’t understand – is capturing audio via firewire a problem? Or can’t you get audio into the Avid via firewire?
With firewire, everything stays digital. With analog, well, it’s analog.

In a nutshell, Mojo accelerates the performance of the Avid software so the CPU doesn’t have to do all the work. The Mojo is why you get as many realtime effects.
I’m not sure recording audio into the Avid was a thought when it was designed. I have (as do many others) an audio board hooked to my Avid’s for getting multiple sources into a single input. The board also allows me to control levels, add initial EQ, etc. I use a Mackie 1402, but there are many other relatively inexpensive audio boards out there for not a lot of money.

Wow – I’m impressed! I’m not sure I could differentiate a field of difference!
Can you jam sync your time code in your cameras? That way you could sync your sources exactly.
Do you have Mojo? Are you feeding it external sync?? If not, that could some of the problem. Having a common source feed both the Avid and your deck might help the problem as well.

Using the overwrite command, you can drag clips where you want. There is a setting – I belive it’s in the timeline setting – called snap to edit (or something like that). When it’s enabled, the clip snaps to the blue line. Disable the setting and you can drag the clip where you want. Keep in mind (and I’m sure you’ve discovered this), when you try to make Avid work like FCP, you’ll wind up being very frustrated. When you come to grips with the fact Avid doesn’t work like FCP, you won’t spend all your time fighting with the interface.

You found what many people belive is the major limitation to mojo – the audio connections. Do you have a camera you can plug your mic into? Do you have any way to record your VO into another program (Sound Forge, etc.)?

It’s really hard to say it’s one thing – Avid is a very deep program. Obvious questions: Do you have the sound up? Do other clips play audio? Does the clip have audio?

Personally, I like the Avid Training DVD’s. There’s also one of the best books available called the Avid editing handbook by Steve Bayes. IMHO, it is hands down the best book out there. You can get it on Amazon (it used to be you could go there through a link on the front page of the COW – you get your book and support the community).

Sure – a picture in picture would do it. Just promote to 3d, rotate and zoom.
Your milage will vary depending on source material, resolution, etc.

Do you have all your tracks enabled?
What kind of hard drive are you going to? SCSI? Firewire?
