What is the consensus on defragging the video drive on an Avid Xpress Pro system? I have recently deleted a bunch of stuff from the drive.

    Thanks,

    Doug

    Don’t.

The system likes having files broken up. Most of your underrun errors are because files are to close together.

I’d defrag the C: drive, but never the media drive.

DO NOT DEFRAG A VIDEO DRIVE. Thi swill cause havoc on your AVID system. The manual says explicitly not to defrag. If you do, your system will not work unless you completely rebuild your database. The Avid software uses a fragmented system on purpose. Especially on a computer with a RAID system. The fragmenterd files can be accesses faster by using that AVID database and that is what allows your system to work without thousands of dollars worth od extra hardware. Once again, DO NOT DEFRAG!
