Universally playable? You might want to consider a VCR…
If you use Sorenson, the 1mbs preset for .wmv works well. Using .wmv might not get you to some Mac users (although there is a mac windows media player out there).
The 1mbs flash movie preset in Sorenson is good as well, but not everyone has flash (most do, but not everyone).
You could do Real Media, but I for one refuse to use RM because of all the crap the player installs.
Better dust off the old VCR…

There’s a button on import dialog called ‘options’. Click on it and change the options on import – they’ll stay that way until you change them again.

I have about 500gb of Avid drives (LVD 160’s) hooked to a Mac Meridian. I’ve striped them in two sets, and have had absolutely no problems for the last five years. I’ve also got a striped set of LVD320’s on an XPress PRo HD, and again, no problems.
Except I need more storage space…

Use the pan and zoom effect. Go ahead and import your pix, resized to Avid resolution. These are for reference only. Lay them in your timeline and apply the pan and zoom effect. Open the effect editor and click on the small box in the upper left hand corner. Navigate to the ORIGINAL files, picking the one that matches your original. I’m not sitting in front of my Avid, but I use ‘display target’. I also apply a gaussian filter as well. It smooths out some of the chunkies.

My experience has been underruns are almost always caused by an audio and video clip on the same drive and same location on the drive. The drive head can’t access the video and audio at the same time quickly enough. I always try to digitize across all my striped drives (there’s a pulldown menu in the digitize tool where you can tell Avid to digitize to all available. If you do that, make sure you’ve selected ‘filter out system drive – I don’t remember where that is – media creation, maybe?). It’s another reason you don’t defrag your media drives. Or it could be a dissolve or effect was rendered to the C: drive, which may not be spinning fast enough. Make sure you select a media drive when you render. If you use the default ‘effect drive’, more than likely your rendering to your system drive.

How are you creating the lower thirds in the first place? When I create lower thirds in Photoshop, I always output to a .png, sized for whatever format I’m working in. Make sure you MERGE your layers in photoshop (if you flatten, you’ll lose your alpha), or at least RASTERIZE whatever layers have effects on them, before you save your .png. Check your options on import to the Avid, making sure you invert your alpha, use 601, and maintain pixel A/R. I never use the matte key effects.
