A new problem with Avid Xpress Pro HD 5.7 running under XP Pro: while using digital cut function to print to tape, the record aborts with the message “audio underrun.” On a 90-minute program, the system halted in three spots, and always in exactly the same spots.

My workaround was to do an audio mixdown and replace the audio tracks on the timeline with the mixdown. No problems once that was done. But I’ve done many digital cuts without this problem. Might there be a setting somewhere that has changed? Or should be changed?

My experience has been underruns are almost always caused by an audio and video clip on the same drive and same location on the drive. The drive head can’t access the video and audio at the same time quickly enough. I always try to digitize across all my striped drives (there’s a pulldown menu in the digitize tool where you can tell Avid to digitize to all available. If you do that, make sure you’ve selected ‘filter out system drive – I don’t remember where that is – media creation, maybe?). It’s another reason you don’t defrag your media drives. Or it could be a dissolve or effect was rendered to the C: drive, which may not be spinning fast enough. Make sure you select a media drive when you render. If you use the default ‘effect drive’, more than likely your rendering to your system drive.

Thanks Jon. You nailed my problem- lots of effects had gone to the C drive thanks to an inexperienced operator.
