November 15, 2007 at 12:09 pm in reply to: 601 or RGB when importing Avid color bars?

I use 601 for everything. There is a very good reason for this, and I researched it completely before making the switch.

Unfortunately, the buffer overwrite has kicked in and now all I can remember is something about eggs….

I recall the RGB bars came in hot on our scopes. Not screaming, but hot enough so that if someone set our video to bars, the video would be about 5-10 IRE to high. 601 seemed to come in at the correct levels.

Are you feeding your sources (decks, etc.) with the same sync? As long as the signal is 1V peak to peak you should be good to go.

November 12, 2007 at 2:54 pm in reply to: Mac DVD authoring

iDVD is pretty effective at creating DVD’s in the Mac. You have to dig to get some of the more advanced settings, but the video is pretty clean.

As far as delivering, you’ll need to check with the station. You probably won’t be able to deliver a set top DVD. In my experience, I’ve delivered an MPEG2 program stream (meaning the audio and video files are one) encoded at a pretty high bit rate (my outlet wants an 8000kb program stream). I’ve also delivered .AVI’s.

You’ll really need to check with your outlet for specific delivery formats.

    I believe QT Pro ($29.99) handles MPEG2 encoding. https://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?productLearnMore=D3381Z/A

November 9, 2007 at 12:33 pm in reply to: UPGRADE AND SYS REQUiReMENTS

The latest XPress Pro version (5.7) has dropped the HD designation. There is no longer the XPress Pro DV line, either. Unfortunately, it looks like you’ve got a $495.00 price tag:

    https://www.avid.com/products/xpressFamily/upgradePath.html

Here is a link to 5.7 system requirements:

    https://www.avid.com/products/xpresspro/specs.asp#pc

A G4 is not listed. Thats not to say it won’t work – you may not be happy with the performance.

[dmcel23] “1. Will my G4 be able to handle editing HDV material? (Or should I go get a new computer altogether)”

I don’t work with HDV, but I’ve heard the more processor power you have the happier you and your footage are.

[dmcel23] “2. Does the new HD version allow Multicamera editing?”

Yes. You only get 4 streams, but you can group as many clips as you like. Map the step button and you can go through all of your clips.

[dmcel23] “3. What OS System will I need to have set in place?”

    10.4.10

[dmcel23] “4. If I go to the AVID site, am I correct to assume I want the $149 upgrade?”

As long as you registered your copy, I believe that to be true.

The best advice I can give is to read EVERYTHING. Twice. I recently upgraded from 5.2 to 5.7. Had I not had someone looking over my shoulder, I would not have noticed the difference in the boxed version instruction regarding updating the dongle. The web instructions are correct.

I use the timeline view. At the bottom of the timeline, to the right of the step in/step out buttons, is a pull down menu. My bet is its called untitled. Pull down that menu, you’ll see ‘Save as…’. You can have multiple views stored here. I’ve got a base setting, then settings for audio work.

Its not as elegant as a button, but I’ve got my keyboard settings crammed with other stuff I use on a daily basis. It works well for me.

November 7, 2007 at 12:28 pm in reply to: what’s your workflow (hvx 200)?

I only use OMF written to a Firestore, not MXF and P2 cards. I did have initial problems, but once I figured out the workflow, its been golden.

The Avid DOES have to be off. In the firestore, it is very important to organize your media. If you do not do this (either OMF or MXF) the footage will not be found. I plug the Firestore into the front of an HP 8xxx series computer. Once the drive shows up, I’ll start up Avid. The Avid will scan the Firestore, and then go to the projects. I select my project, and go into the media tool. Select the Firestore, and any folders you want to open. At this point, using DV25 footage, I can use the Firestore as a media drive (I’ve even done a digital cut with the DV25 footage still on the Firestore). Once I’ve edited, I consolidate the sequence so that the media I used from the Firestore gets transferred to the internal media drives. I’ve even opened the media drive where my footage is and dragged it into a bin in the Avid. It will ask if I want to associate the common audio / video files.

The majority of my P2 experience has been on a PC XPro 4.5 – just last week we upgraded to 5.7 on a Mac. The devil is in the details. Once you get those sorted out, you’ll wonder why you didn’t go tapeless in the first place.

November 6, 2007 at 11:33 am in reply to: setting up simple network – advice wanted

There’s a reason Unity / EditShare are so expensive.

ITS THE MAN! THEY ARE TRYING TO KEEP US DOWN!!!

Sorry. The drugs aren’t working anymore – but the coffee is.

We’ve got all our production machines – both Mac and PC – on a network. Its a gigabit / Cisco router / Cat6 (I’m at the limit of my networking hardware knowledge) thing.

You will not, as I understand it, be able to access different project files stored on a shared drive. The Avid is constantly updating its media database. As you make changes to your project it updates the media database. Having media on a network, with another Avid, would create a feedback loop – as one Avid updates, the other says “Hey, that database file changed. I have to update”. Then the other Avid says “Hey, that database file changed. I have to update”. Then the first Avid says….. You get the picture. Unity / EditShare act as traffic cops. “Settle down, boys, there’s nothing to see here…”

As long as you are just using your shared drive for storage, you should be fine (in the ‘Media Creation’ setting there is a check box to filter out network drives, I believe). A gig network switch is always better (faster) than a 100mbs switch. Transferring files will be quicker. A faster drive is better than a standard 7200rpm drive – faster transfer times.

Last, I’m ging to buy the Lacie Ethernet RAID drive ( https://www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?pid=10877 OR, assuming you are in the UK, https://www.lacie.com/uk/products/product.htm?pid=10876) to facilitate a tapeless workflow. I suppose you could go with a UK69.00 drive. But to paraphrase a pearl of wisdom from the bicycle world, “If you’ve got cheap media, get a cheap drive”.

November 5, 2007 at 11:57 am in reply to: Viewing TC in timeline?

You may also have to change the default view (I believe its frames). As Carl said, click on the numbers centered above the source and record monitors. Select ‘source>V1>TC’. You can do that for both monitors. In AXP, you can only see one view at a time (master, In/Out, Duration), but in MC, you can select several…
