I’m not in front of an Avid right now, but from memory, use the media tool to get MXF footage into your project. Then consolidate your media to your hard drive. Keep in mind, Avid uses a completely different file structure to organize MXF files. It’s not in an OMF folder.

I would qualify that – it’s a mess if you try to slap it into a low-end machine. I just got an new HP machine (3gb of RAM, 3ghz dual core AMD processors) for home stuff. Vista is not as bad as I thought it would be. It does have quirks (the first thing I did was turn off the user account controls). I’ve got some older software that runs fine – once it tells me it won’t. I just click through and everything works. After Effects and Photoshop seem to run fine, although I haven’t run anything at all intensive.

I’m no tech head, but I suspect once they get the kinks worked out, Vista will be one of the most stable platforms we’ve had in a while. I do agree, though – stick with XP until Avid works out the bugs.

Joe is right. Taking background noise out requires pretty sophisticated software. I’d use Sound Forge with a Noise Reduction Plug-in. If re-voicing is out of the question and you don’t have Sound Forge, I’d try a parametric EQ in the audio suite and try to pin-point the river. You could then mix in the original clip. Keep in mind it will never sound like the rest of your clips.

It’s been a few years since I used OS9 myself. If I recall correctly, there is a folder called applications. Or maybe it was a Media Composer folder… Anyway, once you find the MC folder, find the settings folder and delete the MCState.

To zap the PRAM, hold down the command, option, p and r keys until your mac reboots 4 times:

Try trashing your MCState settings.

When was the last time you zapped your PRAM?

Also, you can select the clips you want (either lasso or by clicking on them in the segment mode) and use the slip-n-slide buttons (the m thru / keys) to move either 1 or 10 frames.

What make / model is the scope? When was the last time the scope was calibrated? Do you have the instructions? There is usually a way to calibrate the scope.

Are you saying you can’t find your footage within the Avid program?

Try opening your digitize tool – the default location should be there (it’ll say something like ‘Z media’, or however you’ve named your drives).

Avid files are generally NOT compatible with other edit systems without exporting the files to something general like quicktime.

Look in the settings tab, then ‘digitize’ (or capture – I don’t remember which…)
