OK. So at the chop shop where I work we edit a lot of longform videos… corporate, educational, documentary, etc. Some of these programs can be quite long… up to 2 hours sometimes.
My question is about finding a more efficient way to move big chunks of video/audio around in the timeline. Of course, there are the segment mode tools with their splice and overwrite functions. But in order to grab large amounts of media in the timeline all at once you either have to either draw a marquee around all of the clips or shit+click all of the clips you want to move. This can be quite time consuming and inaccurate. Not to mention that you run the risk of losing sync in relation to the video/audio.
So here’s the question finally. Is there a way to select all clips forward or backward from a certain point in time and thenh collectively move them… kinda like the tools in FCP will do? And is there a way to lock video and audio clips together so that when you move one the other comes along for the ride?
I’ve been editing professionally for about 5 years now on various systems and every NLE I’ve used up until this point has a feature that will enable this desired outcome. Am I missing something within Avid than can make my life sooooooooooo much better?
    Thanks fellow bovines. -Justin

Well I don’t know how you would do this in FCP, but there is always more than one way to do something on the Avid. You have mentioned a few possibilities, but when it comes to moving around a big edited piece of the timeline, I just mark and in and an out point, select the tracks that I want to include in the move, and then, on a Mac I believe it would be Command(could be control or other)Extract or Lift (depending on if you want to leave a black hole to deal with later, or if you want the timeline to do a pull up so there is no hole). The Command key (or whichever it is) will automatically send the chunk you have cut out to the left monitor for you to put back into the timeline where you want it to go. If you need to do some other stuff before you put it back into the timeline, then before you extract or lift it out, subclip it to a bin where it will be safe until you are ready to put it back in. As for the sync, I always have my synclocks on. That’s just my personal preference to work that way. You may have to fix the music tracks at the cut points but everything should stay in sync.

Also, you can select the clips you want (either lasso or by clicking on them in the segment mode) and use the slip-n-slide buttons (the m thru / keys) to move either 1 or 10 frames.
