You got away (and most do) with this for a while. I suspect even though you uninstalled the updates, something stuck around to keep your software from working.

The only thing I see different from how I do it is I use 601 levels rather than RGB.

I use animation CODEC exclusively, bringing in at 2:1 on a Meridian Mac, and DV50MXF on XPress…

Can you post more information? What settings did you render it out of AE? What were your settings on import into the Avid?

I would export it as quicktime same as source out of the Avid.

Once it is a quicktime, you’d then encode it using a compression software (procoder and sorenson are the best for my money). You’ll also need some kind of DVD authoring package (Sonic bundles with some versions of Avid). Unless you have Avid Studio toolkit, you probably won’t be able to go directly to DVD from the timeline.

I checked the Avid site for your camera (https://www.avid.com/content/8927/SUPPORTED%20DEVICES%20FOR%20AVID%20EDITOR%20PRODUCTS.pdf) and its not listed. That doesn’t mean the camera didn’t work, or that it won’t work. The camera may have stopped working because of an update. Do you have another firewire device you could try, preferebly from the approved list?

If you don’t, try rolling back your OS before the updates were installed and see if you can get the camera working again.

Have you made any changes to your system (perhaps you have windows auto update turned on? If so, do not pass go – turn it off…)

What type of camera is it? What version of Avid are you using?

What are the specs of your machine (OS version, RAM, type of machine)? Were you able to play timelines before? Did you change anything? You said you changed the SCSI card – why? What did you change it to?

A complete rundown of your system is essential to troubleshooting your problem.

According to the Avid System requirements page (https://www.avid.com/products/xpresspro/qualified_mac_notebooks.pdf), iBooks are’nt supported. You’ve also need OS 10.4.10. These lists don’t necessarily mean Avid won’t work on ‘unapproved’ systems, but fixing the issues you describe are more difficult.

Disregarding the obvious FCP flame…

I’m definitely heading towards tapless. In the government world, its silly not to. Long gone are the in place enginering staff / TV studio budgetary black holes. If you are smart, you’ll get away from tape as soon as you can. Having a rack full of UMatic, BetaSP, et. al. is impressive. Tapless is money.

As for the software / hardware combo? I use Avid because it is the best PC-based NLE out there. My knowledge base is Avid, my client base does not care what I use to edit their product and I prefer Avid. Avid works for me. ’nuff said.
