I should also say your hardware will limit you as well. I’ve got a HP8000 that is pretty much limited to MC 2.7, though it’s been running MC3.0, I’ve bought a new box and reverting the HP back to 2.7.

You can upgrade as far as your budget allows – you simply need to follow the instructions and run the versioner for your dongle. The dongle doesn’t limit you from upgrades – your budget does.

As for the firewire, it should be run into the mojo (use the small, 4-pin firewire). Make sure that connection is correct.

Are all these systems configured exactly the same? Have you tried turning on the deck first, then turning on the MC software? Have you configured the deck manually (meaning selecting the deck through the deck configuration menu)? Are you running straight into the Mojo? AFAIK, running the deck into the Mojo is the only way to control the deck through MC…

Yes, you can upgrade your systems without changing the dongle. When you upgrade, follow the directions exactly – you’ll upgrade the dongle in the process. With multiple systems, I’ll upgrade one, make sure it works, then move on.

Do you have a foreign keyboard? If not, don’t select it. Select the ‘button to menu’ radio button. Click the key on your keyboard. The cursor should turn into a little square. Go to the menu item you want to map – click on it. You are done. If you want to map items from the command pallette (cntrl + 3, or tools>command pallette) select the ‘button to button’ button (who’s got the button…)

December 30, 2008 at 1:53 pm in reply to: Mojo sync problems?

As long as you get a black burst generator, and run it to your deck and the mojo, you’ll have no synch issues. No need to lay audio and video in two passes. That is, provided you have an certified system, and the deck has rs422 (9-pin control). Firewire control (at least on the Pannie decks I’ve used) won’t let you insert edit. And to use rs422, you’ll need a device similiar to the Rosetta Stone Bottom line, check your deck against Avid’s certified device list. You may not even be able to insert based on your deck.

Avid does make a HD IO – the Mojo DX. For the 10k Avid wants, I’d invest in a Sony EX or a Panasonic P2…

I import .png, tiff and plain ol’ .psd files. They come out fine. How are you importing them?

[timothy reed] “setup a visual timecode window for an entire sequence”

There is an effect in the effects pallet called ‘timecode’. I’m not sure where it is (I’m not in front of an Avid right now). It’s not realtime, but there was a real time TC effect floating around the web. Try searching for it…

[timothy reed] “How do I slo mo a picture”

Load the clip you want to slo-mo into your source monitor. Find a quick menu (I call it a hamburger menu ’cause that’s what it looks like… Usually, it’s between the source / record monitor) and pull it down. You can tear the menu away and place it on your work space somewhere if you’d like. In the menu, there is an icon that looks like an italicized media clip. Click on that, and you’ll get a dialog box. I like the ‘interpolate both fields’ selection, but play around and see what you like best.

Does your source / record monitor flash? You may have a window just slightly on one of your monitors.

December 27, 2008 at 7:30 pm in reply to: Switching Audio in Groups

Top right hand corner of the source monitor, there is a pulldown menu (you have to be in multicam mode to see it). It looks like a grouped clip – click on it, and select ‘audio follow video’. I believe that will do what you are asking.
