Basic firewire connection
Posted by Matt King on January 2, 2009 at 10:26 amHI,
I am having trouble with one of my MC2.5 on XP, I have a HDV deck that the Avid MC won’t see.The deck is fine, it works on other edit suites and when it is plugged in the pc sees it, and even can be controlled and seen though windows.
I have done all the usual things like Deck config (OHCI), tried all the firewire ports back and front and removed all other firewire cables, with all my other suite i just plug and go (usually).
I also use and SDI mojo and that works fine, I unplug that and restart before i try and connect the firewire.
I was wondering if windows has control of it some how and that is why MC does not see it?
The deck is a sony hvr-m25e
Also can upgrade free to any other versions, on avid website i can download 2.8.4 would that still work with my dongle, if not what is the highest version i can go to…Any ideas?
cheers for any help

January 2, 2009 at 2:02 pmAre all these systems configured exactly the same? Have you tried turning on the deck first, then turning on the MC software? Have you configured the deck manually (meaning selecting the deck through the deck configuration menu)? Are you running straight into the Mojo? AFAIK, running the deck into the Mojo is the only way to control the deck through MC…
Yes, you can upgrade your systems without changing the dongle. When you upgrade, follow the directions exactly – you’ll upgrade the dongle in the process. With multiple systems, I’ll upgrade one, make sure it works, then move on.

January 2, 2009 at 2:29 pmall the system i have are slightly configured different running various versions, i inherited all this not my doing.
I have tried turning everything off and on in different orders.
The Mojo has nothing do do with controlling any deck! it is either through the com1 port or firewire.I cannot get avid to see anything to do with the firewire, even through deck config.
I think it is a windows issue or a bad file!
What i meant about the dongle is that the dongle for 2.5 wont work with version3xx, what is the lastest version i can upgrade to untill the license runs out

January 6, 2009 at 2:32 amYou can upgrade as far as your budget allows – you simply need to follow the instructions and run the versioner for your dongle. The dongle doesn’t limit you from upgrades – your budget does.
As for the firewire, it should be run into the mojo (use the small, 4-pin firewire). Make sure that connection is correct.

I should also say your hardware will limit you as well. I’ve got a HP8000 that is pretty much limited to MC 2.7, though it’s been running MC3.0, I’ve bought a new box and reverting the HP back to 2.7.

January 6, 2009 at 1:04 pmWhat i mean is free upgrade, i know that if i download 2.6 from avid that it will work with my dongle that came with my mc 2.5, but i was just wondering what is the max version i can go to.
I just think this would solve a few bug that im having.Maybe this is not possible at all, maybe im not suppose to be able to do this, but i have all the correct licenses so not trying to pull one over on avid.
I doubt i gain much but i would expect that there would be better versions that sort out windows upgrade issues etc.The PC would have no problems as it is an HP xw8400 so has plenty of grunt to cope with latest version of avid.

January 7, 2009 at 4:05 amYou probably can’t go any higher than 2.8 for free – I’m guessing 3.0 will cost about $50.00. It really is a good investment to go to 3.0, but 2.8 is a good upgrade. just go to https://www.avid.com/support/downloadcenter/upgradeOptions.asp and see what applies to you.

January 7, 2009 at 10:30 amThanks Jon, Thats what I thought.
I have used version 3 and agree it is an improvement in parts. but like a lot of people I have no budget at the moment and version 2.xx has worked fine for what we do and trying to convince the money men to upgrade is a skill i cant seem to master.I still have not solved the problem of the firewire, but I am going to get XP up to the latest version and put on 2.6 which will make it identical to a system i all ready have working.
Most people i have spoken to say it is Windows not letting go of the firewire port, so i think this should do it.Thanks again.. over and out..

January 7, 2009 at 12:42 pmIt depends on what ‘the latest’ XP upgrade is. 2.X is only certified for XP, SP2. Don’t compound your problems by upgrading to far.
Have you tried going straight into the Mojo? As I said before, that is the preferred method.
