One possibility – are you trying to play very soon after adding the clip to the timeline? PPro may still be conforming the audio.
Another possibility – have you done any recent Adobe upgrades? If so, delete all media cache files. This is particularly true if you have media you know has audio, but PPro shows it as video-only.

May 21, 2018 at 5:38 pm in reply to: How to create a menu for your home video digital movie (that doesn’t go on DVD)?If it is still standard def stuff, you could still use Encore. When you are finished authoring, burn an ISO file instead of DVD.
Then use VideoLan VLC Media Player as your playback app. It reads ISO files and will display and use your “DVD” navigation.

Unless you are having problems, using proxies will take additional time to prep and finish your projects.
If you ARE having problems, what problems are you having?

May 18, 2018 at 3:03 pm in reply to: Is Premiere 12 the most buggy release of Premiere Ever? WTF.What Dave said – that is so true. We’ll consider 2018 once 2019 is released, and 2018 is on to the dot 1 or dot 2 (or even dot 3) release.
We are staying with 2017, and happy to be there just getting work done.

BTW, sometimes compressed audio (for example, MP3) will misbehave in the timeline. I almost always convert to uncompressed audio for the edit.

April 26, 2018 at 1:23 pm in reply to: Audio handles when editing an audio file in Adobe AuditionRemember, you do not have to enter Audition through Premiere Pro. You can open it independently, open and work on your file, and save it with a new unique file name. Then close Audition, hop back into PPro and import your new unique media. Original remains untouched.
Some would say that is a rather old-fashioned way to do things. Perhaps it is. It also works.

You don’t say which system you recently updated to 2018 (or was it both of them?)
At any rate, I would shot down PPro, delete any and all cache files, and restart the computer. THen see if the issue is corrected. You may still have some re-link issues; I don’t know what the deal is there. But it is often the cache file delete that clears up the “no video” issue for me.
I’ve seen this happen when I was opening an old project some time after an Adobe update.
Just FYI – if it was me I would never update mid-project unless I absolutely had no choice. THen I would still try to find a way to avoid it.
