Try importing the project into an new project with the same settings as the one your trying to open.

This is a seriously annoying bug. I found a fix for it. You need to reorganise the panels so the stuff on the left side is ontop and the stuff on the bottom (styles) is on the side. Tab the tools and align stuff together on the top. That seems to have opened perfectly everytime like this?

  • This is not FCP and FCP won’t do what you want properly either. (update each clip in the timeline). FCP keeps making a new sample of each instance of the clip you cut etc.
PPro can’t alter the original clip in the project panel. It is a reference to the original clip on the harddrive.
Apply the effect you want the way you want it. Copy the clip from the timeline. Find and select each copy of the clip throughout the entire timeline. The right click and paste attributes. All clips selected will take on the effect and its parameters.

    Did you install anything lately?
I’d use System Restore to see if that fixes anything?

Otherwise you may need to reinstall. Was it working before? What system are you using?

July 8, 2008 at 11:50 pm in reply to: Care to give some feedback?

    Hi ya Harm,
    Here’s my initial feedback…
    1. All Lower Thirds need some kind of BG element to throw them forward. A quick 6 frame fade is good to create enough movement for the eye to see it. I lost some of the thirds because they didn’t attract my eye (cut and no contrast with white and BG of shot).
    2. About 2:27 (mm:ss) I noticed a shot used twice and another shot between that looked very similar. I’d probably remove them altogether.
    3. Overall it felt like a fairly tight edit. I’d probably remove some shots that feel repetitive story wise, some shots of ropes, only need one to say there are ropes, move on them doing their job right after that. No need to show two or more shots of ropes being ropes on deck. 😉
    4. The Title Text you’ve used at the beginning is a little less pro that the text then used in the lower 3rds. Keep is clean and simple. Probably use clean colours not mixed colours in text. I’d find a shot that speaks we are going on a cruise and the days are sunny with a space to the side on top where text can fit into the shot not covering the boat. Or add a BG Graident at the bottom with the text deliberately there to be read. It’s kinda hidden in the shot at the moment.
    5. I recently cut a short sailing piece for a Volvo sales group in Melbourne. It was similar to your edit, but I used quick fades sometimes. I think with the song you have some fades into the quieter parts of the day (sunsets) are always a nice sense of the slow and relaxed pace of that moment.
    6. Nice work!

A 30 Second spot is 00:00:30:00 and has half a second silence (no audio) at the start and the end.

Check the type of adding your doing from the source monitor, button switches from Video ONLY (Prob set to this one), Audio ONLY, Video+Audio. Or the target tracks aren’t set to anything in the timeline, depending on how you’re adding the media to the timeline.

  • This only works in CS3!
If you want to replace a clip in the timeline while keeping the effects, transitions etc you can do this several ways.
1a. Clip for clip – Select the clip in the Project Panel, hold the ALT key, drag it ontop of the clip you want to replace in the timeline, when it highlights over the top let the mouse go (HOLD ALT STILL).
1b. Clip for clip – Select clip in project panel. Right click the clip in timeline. select replace>bin.
    2. Frame Match – Open the clip you want to replace with in the source monitor. move the playhead to the frame you want to match in replacement. Find the matching frame in the timeline clip. Right click and replace>from source monitor, match frame.

What is the version of Quicktime? That could be causing all your problems.
7.4 was a dog. If 7.5 is not working either go back to 7.3

June 27, 2008 at 12:46 am in reply to: Video Transition Effects missing

    Hey Nicholas,
Thanks for your reply. I’m just stirring. I own and use Mac for FCP work all the time and cross platform PProCS3/AE work. I actually teach all the programs too. It’s great to get responses like your’s because people too often think a Mac is a better option because they want an iPhone.

I’ve been working as an Editor for 8 years or so now and have found both systems to be frustrating for different reasons…
Oh, I forgot to give advice… Mac version of PProCS3 has many missing effects – don’t know why? It just does. Very frustrating working on a PC taking to Mac for further work. (They work when you open in PC again?…Ask Adobe? I’ve tried).

I have heard many a PC horror story, but PC edit suites should be “Edit Suites”. They don’t crash if they are built properly – using approved Hardware (HP or DELL systems) and Dedicated RT Hardware. An edit suite shouldn’t be used to surf the net – only to get updates and register software…

I found working in HD that the Mac version of After Effects crashes a lot. PC version doesn’t seem to have same issue. And why make a codec that keeps the mac a closed system (ProRes). Extremely frustrating not having a PC version of the codec. This closed market attitude is workflow stunting, trying to force production companies to have a Mac system.

I know OS types are very different making the operations and memory uses of the computers very different beasts. I and many other editors would love to see a single OS and a single Disk Format (FAT32 is only one Mac and PC can use together, but that is so limited and crashes on multi-format external drives on Mac’s now).

I foresee the Mac becoming a brand, as with it’s iPod, iPhone etc and all computers becoming a single OS Gelling OSX simplicity or Windows complexity which users can set and switch when they bootup and forget about until they want to use it the other way.

To get back to my point, which i totally got off – too much coffee i think. If anyone wants a rich Adobe Experience the future which is 64-bit (utilizing ridiculous amounts of memory) is coming only on the PC. Mac have recently announced they want all developers to build future software with yet another coding format. Adobe and others need to completely rewrite all the codes for their future version of all Apps on the Mac.

Steve Jobs has made Apple the mega-must have technology it is, but his focus is branding and the entertainment products market.

All I’m trying to say is that I believe the web with all the Adobe Products is the future of Production is being forced to run half baked experiences on the Mac platform because Apple are so frustrating to work with.

    Sorry, I got on a rant… Jon 😛
