you will always (or should be) exporting what you see in the program monitor. If it is zoomed in there it will export out that way. It sounds like you want the photos to fit to the screen size based on their shape. Eg: a landscape photo to fit as wide as it can go without being stretched and as tall with a profile shot. You need to select the clips in the timeline that you want this to affect and right click on it (or them if they are all selected as a group/s). Select from the drop down list “Scale to Frame Size”. This can be turned on to automatically do it to anything added to the timeline in the Edit>Preferences…

Export it in native square pixel, so on export settings make the frame size 1024×576 (PAL) or 854×480 (NTSC) with Sq.Pixel PAR depending on the format. Then it will play in QT properly and import and conform to any timeline in the correct shape too.

July 26, 2008 at 4:35 am in reply to: how do you save your title in CS3?

Open the project with the title. Select the title in the project panel. File>Export>Title
Import that file to the new project and it’s a saved title for use anytime any project. Or you could make it a template and it will be available to all projects and there’s no searching for it. just open the templates and open it from there.

I’d probably work on clip by clip if i were doing this. Depends on the clip count. If there wasn’t that many exporting to uncompressed (feature length would be Massive file size TB not GB) cut that up and apply the grading effects to each cup clip instead of using keyframes.
You have less control and more work if you have to use keyframes. Once you get the look right you can copy the effect in the controls panel and apply it to the other clips in a clip at a time or copy the whole clip with the effect, (as long as no other clips/cut have effects on them) and paste attributes to add the effect to a massive selection on the timeline.

I’d keep working with the original edit in most cases as this means I can make quick changes and not use big HDD space. But you’ll always get a better result in an uncompressed timeline with uncompressed footage. Just don’t use keyframed grading!

  • It sounds like the Program Monitor has the Draft Quality Setting running. Right click in the ProgMon and Select the Highest Quality Setting.

Personally this is a huge flaw in the Adobe workflow and must be addressed in cs4, should have been in cs2 let alone cs3. It does not have this feature. You’ll need to export new clips from the timeline. Reimport them…

You can select the clip in the timeline, and paste it into an AE comp. It will be the same cut clip from the timeline. It might paste itself in the same timeline position in time too. Just select its layer if its not seen in the comp and press alt+HomeKey to snap it to the head of the comp time.

July 12, 2008 at 4:55 am in reply to: White line appearing in letterbox matte

I’ve experience this annoying phenomenon in FCP and PPro. It’s a single line of pixels fluttering between the interlacing. I used to add a small amount of blur to the matte. Blur effect set to 1 should do.
Been working in full (anamorphic) widescreen and haven’t letterboxed in years so haven’t had problem anymore.

July 12, 2008 at 4:52 am in reply to: upgrade

They did have that as part of the upgrade acceptance, don’t know if it still exists. Should do as the software when you install asks for the serial of which upgrade type, PPro 1 (AKA 7) was on that list.
Word of advice, don’t expect projects to open properly in cs3. Start new jobs with cs3, finish v1 (7) in v1 (7). Same goes to v2 into CS3.

July 12, 2008 at 4:50 am in reply to: newbie, need help syncin up drum set (2 cams)

Video cannot be moved by less than it’s smallest sample (frames per second). Audio can be moved by it’s own smallest sample (sample rate) that means video is a frame a time, but audio can move in its 48Khz or 44.1kHz sample rate.
This function is activated in the small triangle top right of the timeline panel “Show Audio Time Units”. Switch it off once you’re done. This shift can only work in the timeline, not the source.
If the vision is out – it’s out.
Generally the vision leading the out of sync audio can work, you see it then you hear it. Cause and effect. But hearing it then seeing it won’t work as it disturbs the cause and effect concept our brains accept.
