Export Movie Settings to Quick Time 7.3 Pro
Once again, I’ve been asked for an edit in QT. I opened a file document from Adobe entitled Compression Primer (compprimer_0306.pdf)
I exported out to the MOV file using H.264 which wasn’t mentioned in the document, but I believe that this new codec standard came out afterwards.

Movie Size to “Actual Size” or “Fit to Screen” for wide screen movies in preferences….
I still get a squeezed picture – not 16:9.
When I export to AVD DV with the same output settings, I can open it in QT with a proper 16:9 ratio, albeit the quality of the DV is terrible.
Final Cut Pro seems to have the same problem. The solution I found that worked is as follows:
1. After you have exported the movie from Final Cut Pro, open it in QuickTime Player.
* If the movie is displayed at 16:9 widescreen in QuickTime Player, there’s no need to continue these steps. iDVD will treat the movie as widescreen.
* If the movie is displayed in QuickTime Player at 4:3 or 3:2 (not widescreen), continue with the steps below.
2. Choose Window > Show Movie Properties.
3. In the Properties window, click Video Track in the Name column.
4. Click the Visual Settings button.
5. Deselect the checkbox for Preserve Aspect Ratio.
6. Change the Scaled Size:
* For NTSC, enter 853 x 480.
* For PAL, enter 1024 x 576.
Now the movie should be displayed at a 16:9 aspect ratio.
7. Choose File > Save to save the movie.Question is: How can make the appropriate settings be made in PPCS3 to avoid having to reprocess the file in Quick Time?

Export it in native square pixel, so on export settings make the frame size 1024×576 (PAL) or 854×480 (NTSC) with Sq.Pixel PAR depending on the format. Then it will play in QT properly and import and conform to any timeline in the correct shape too.

Is there a table of standard aspect ratios conversions you’re aware of? For example I need to convert from 320×240 for 16:9. I tried 480×240 – it seemed to work out in part, but the picture looked a little washed out. QT “flattened” the picture and it did look a bit better.

take 16:9 ratio = 16 parts wide and 9 parts high
width:height
Eg: 480 wide / 16 parts = 30 (1 unit)
30 x 9 parts = 270 (height)
therefore 480×270 = 16:9 square pixel aspect ratiotake height and divide by 9, then multiply by 16 to get the widescreen version of that frame size.
