Hey Josh,

Sounds like you are trying to playback at Full Playback Quality with effects on it. You want to drop down to 1/2. It only affects the way you watch is back, like an on the fly proxy via the software that eases the taxing weight from the Original media/compressor on the CPU. That’s Mercury at work, on a Software only level. Doing the CUDA Hardware GPU side helps with RT effects. I use a Quadro and it rocks. There’s a reason the GTX cards are cheaper. Gaming cards/drivers not built and tested specifically for Heavy Video work.

Let us know what happens when you drop the playback to 1/2 and be sure the Hardware is being recognised and used in CUDA GPU Mercury Playback Engine.

Hey Ron,

The content is on a separate installer to the Suite. The disc will be called content.

If it’s Electronic Software Download (ESD) then there is another installer to get, which just installs the content.

You would need to access your adobe.com account to register your purchase and then get access to the ESD for content. 🙂

Have you exported to see the output quality?

ProRes might not show up as “clean” when set to Fit view but it’s only while you “work” with it. There is no acutal quality loss when exporting.

Are you using CS5? If so you need to have the latest updates for it as there was a bug found that added the preview render files to the project file size, which was corrected with an update.

We might need some more details about the version you are using, system specs OS etc.

I doubt your graphics card is actually using the GPU acceleration of Mercury Playback Engine as the Mac Laptops never released with compatible cards. So you will be using software mode. Which is fine, you just need to understand some more “tech” to get the best editing experience with your laptop.

This would mean that editing without any effects could be fine on playback res set to 1/2. Cuts only.

Any effects or transitions will best be experienced set to 1/4. Be sure to have the media on a separate drive to the OS, so a FW800 (min) drive or if you have the 17inch with card slot use eSATA connection and drive.

If you want to watch back in full resolution you will need to render to watch it smooth, you can set the render range with the work area bar, using alt+[ set in and alt+] set out for work area bar. Then render the work area bar (I have assigned a short cut “Shift+Enter” for that function as it doesn’t have an assigned key/combo by default).

There are some technical things to be aware of, I know it’s perhaps not the “creative” responsibility, but once you know some tech behind PPro, you will quickly see how to maintain those “zone” moments.

Keep in mind that the Mercury Playback engine allows for the resolution settings and better codec performance and that lower resolution is an on the fly, Realtime Proxy that doesn’t affect the original quality and has no effect on the export settings/quality.

CS4 Vs CS5 or CS5.5 is like comparing apples and oranges. You are talking 32-bit Vs 64-bit OS and Apps.

I’d highly recommend you test on someone elses system that you would consider purchasing. You could try to get some time on a resellers build to test the experience…

Hey Jake,

Can you post your system specs please including the OS version.

If you don’t have a certified NVidia Card that’s using the GPU Acceleration, you may need to knock the Playback Resolution down. Once you start adding effects to the DSLR clips they take way more grunt.
