  • Saving as with a different name is giving me problems

Posted by Alberto Moreno on February 24, 2012 at 10:41 pm

    Hello there,

I’m saving my Premiere Pro project with a different name as I update/advance with it:

i.e. My project name is “Hello” and as I advance I save another version “Hello – 2” (keeping “Hello”).

This creates a new “- 2” Adobe Premiere Pro Preview Files and a new Encoded Files folder.

The problem is that as I save this way the project files gets bigger in size and it takes longer and longer to save and open – also Premiere becomes slower and slower.

I do this in Logic Pro (and many pros do and even advise to do so) and also in Final Cut Pro 7 without problem.

To solve the problem I delete all the Renders and render it all again and then save it with a new fresh name but if I then update and save another file it all happens again.

Is this a wrong way to work with Premiere? Why is this happening and how should I correctly save – should I stick to only one file?

    Thanks

    Hi Alberto,

Multiple project files is absolutely the way to go, if you’ve ever had a corrupted files, you’ll know what I mean.

That’s unless you have a reliable backup system. I have a backup running every hour that takes in new files, but I still save new projects files daily to stay organized.

I don’t believe it’s duplicating anything, and it should only affect the render files. I usually let things go along and delete previews when I’m done with the project.

    Hi ALberto,

Are you using CS5? If so you need to have the latest updates for it as there was a bug found that added the preview render files to the project file size, which was corrected with an update.

We might need some more details about the version you are using, system specs OS etc.

    Cheers JB

Hi Jon, I haven’t taken the time to update – neither my Mac OS X leopard nor Premiere.

I think that should be the solution to my problem. I’ll try that and write back.

    Thanks for your help!!!

Use “Save a copy” instead. Guaranteed just a copy of your project as it exists. Just that data.

All is working fine after the updated OS and CS – I’ll keep using those tips while saving.

    Thanks Vince, Jon and Paul
