This is what it is supposed to do. Your DVD player is supposed to letterbox it on a 4:3 screen. You may need to change a menu setting on your player.

Yep. I have seen this before. This is your problem. Never do that.

In the future, just skip that clip…leave that clip offline and “manually” digitize a new one, then edit it into the sequence.
You can set your timeline to display offline clips in red to make it easy to find.

I had this happen once.

I opened the problem clips in Cinema Tools…which read them as 29.97….clicked the conform button and selected 29.97 (same frame rate). Brought the clips into FCP and it now read them as 29.97

Nests have had inconsistent behavior. Sometimes Media Manager works correctly with them, sometimes not. If you think you can make your second solution work, then go for it.

Now, there are basically two questions I have:

1) since the tapes have not been broken down into clips but whole tapes have been captured, is there a way of not having to capture the WHOLE tapes but really just the portions that have been used in the timeline? How would I do that?

2) Are there any effects (filters, speed changes, nesting etc.) that will cause trouble when onlining?

Should work well if you follow the directions above. The latest version of FCP seems to have solved the issues with speed changes, which were a problem in the past.

wrong settings…these are the audio scrub settings…not what we are talking about.

take a look at your import audio settings.

set them to convert to your project audio format on import.

Perhaps, FCP expects your deck to be set to NDF (your deck only supports NDF under machine control). Its simply toggling the TC format to the opposite setting. If you already have the deck set DF, it simply toggles it back to NDF–the opposite of what you want. Remember, your deck really doesnt support DF under machine control, so FCP may have very limited communication with it…it does not know your deck is set to DF already.

Try setting your deck to NDF and setting DF in FCP only.

You need to unlink the clips before changing the reel number. On a PC, hold down control and shift, then select Unlink from the Clip menu (without holding down Control and Shift, the menu shows only “Relink”)

Once the clips are unlinked you can change the reel number without affecting the original clips. Change the reel number then batch capture.

The Avid Quicktime codec does not work properly in FCP…in fact, FCP may crash at startup if the latest version of the Avid Codec is installed on your system (consider yourself lucky if this does not happen to you)

The Avid Codec was never intended to be an editing codec anyway. Avids, themselves do not play these files directly (you import them and Avid converts them to OMF media). Its intended purpose is as an intermediate format to exchange files with After Effects and other programs.

See if your friend can re-export these in the Animation codec.
