Try exporting as a Quicktime reference movie, then drag the reference movie into Compressor running as a standalone program. It will work about 10 times faster.

just for laughs, check to make sure your preference for new sequence creation is set for DF. The default setting is NDF.

I actually had a similar problem at home a few years ago…I called the cable company and they installed a filter between the cable box and the monitor that eliminated the problem. This was with SD, though.

What codec are you trying to use. Some, such as the Avid codec, cannot be resized to different dimensions.

As an Avid user, you are overlooking a powerful difference between FCP and Avid….You can have more than one sequence open at a time! Keep your select sequence open, dont put it in the source monitor. Toggle to the open select sequence and match frame from there.
In FCP you can also have more than one project open…opens up some other possibilites for workflow.

If you get a AJA Kona3 Card you can ouput SD and HD versions of your sequences simultaneously (hardware down and upconversion), as well as crossconvert between different HD formats.
You can select whether you want letterbox or center cut. -
Is this a sequence? You could change it back very easily…or did all the source timecode change to DF?

You dont need to change anything when recording. Leave the signal anamorphic.
When the DVD is played back ALL DVD players are required to be able to letterbox a 16:9 movie. Its part of the DVD spec.

You have probably noted that unlike Export as Quicktime Movie, exporting with Quicktime Conversion does not allow chapters. here is a workaround.
Duplicate the sequence.
Change the sequence settings of the duplicate to a compressed codec, such as Photo JPEG.
Export as Quicktime Movie (not Quicktime Conversion). This will take a while as it has to render.
