    Hi,

I’m working on a 45min documentary for a production company. The orginial footage is on DigiBeta tapes, and the company have decided to capture it as DV-PAL (I’m in PAL land btw) via a AJA IO. System is a Dual 2GHz G5, XServe Raid, OS10.4.8, FCP 5.1.2, AJA IO.

Now, there are basically two questions I have:

    1) since the tapes have not been broken down into clips but whole tapes have been captured, is there a way of not having to capture the WHOLE tapes but really just the portions that have been used in the timeline? How would I do that?

    2) Are there any effects (filters, speed changes, nesting etc.) that will cause trouble when onlining?

    Any help is much appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Colin

Use the FCP help…read the chapter on Media Manager. Then read this article.

Should work well if you follow the directions above. The latest version of FCP seems to have solved the issues with speed changes, which were a problem in the past.

    Hi John,

and many thanks for pointing out this article to me. And I’ll also have a look at the FCP manual. Thanks for easing my mind about the speed changes.

What would you suggest about nesting? I know that nests won’t be included when up-resing, so would I try to avoid them FULL STOP or simply nest when absolutely necessary and then up-res the nested items in their own sequence?

Maybe you have got a got tip once more?

Thanks anyway for your help, I’m really thankful for it!

    Cheers,
    Colin

[Colin Shamrock] “I know that nests won’t be included when up-resing, so would I try to avoid them FULL STOP or simply nest when absolutely necessary and then up-res the nested items in their own sequence?”

Nests have had inconsistent behavior. Sometimes Media Manager works correctly with them, sometimes not. If you think you can make your second solution work, then go for it.

    Hi,

and thanks again. I guess I’ll try to avoid nesting if I can. In case I won’t be able to avoid nesting, I’ll let you know if/how it worked out.

    Cheers,
    Colin
