i assume it wil behave like all 10 bit uncompressed HD in FCP…turn into an 8 Bit pumpkin the moment you render effects…

yes, no cross convert, but when you pipe in HD-SDI or SDI, it will up or down convert it to the format of your choice. it will upconvert this uncompressed to HD, DVC PRO HD, 720 or 1080 i/p. for downconvert, you can take 720 or 1080 input and turn it into about anything SD–compressed, uncompressed, all of the ways you can capture SD.

what are all the formats? 1080i/p,720p, uncompressed, dvcprohd, etc? yup.

the kona 2 takes in hd-sdi, sdi or dual link hd. an IO would do the trick. the IO has everything in and everything out, so analog to sdi is one of the many functions you can set it up as a stand alone in fron tof the kona 2. i have not paid too much attention to the other product, is it shipping AND working? if they can get you analog to sdi and you feel comfortable, go for it.

you can keep the ul3d, just when you work with uncompressed, you will notice you are bumping your head. it chokes the bandwidth now available and necessary with the ul4d, you will think you have a whole new drive. if you are working compressed DVCPRO HD, the ul3d will make no difference.

the 2Ghz mac you have will work great. alot of times, people using the huge scsi from the SD world have the ul3d, not the UL4D which will give you the best scsi performance and is necessary for HD. if you wish to upconvert analog SD, the full IO is needed, but if you just want to ingest, then the IOLA is perfect.

    rich,

the IO LA does not have SDI out, so you can use it as you always do for SD, but it cannot pass an SDI signal to the kona 2 for uprez, for example. otherwise you can ingest audio all you want viea firewire…

well, since you did ask for the best, the AJA IOLA is 10 bit in and OUT, not eight bit as the cheapest things on the market tend to be. most people find it necessary…but the cheapest way to get video into your machine is probably a firewire ADS pyro, but that would hardly be the best. the internet is a big space, but i imagine the amount of the people with kona 2 and a decklink SP card are remarkably few.

you do not have to use the IO to output. the kona 2 actually lays off analog, it is just the ingest that needs to be SDI–with dual link, there is not enough room on a PCI card to have anything else in the back of it other than the two HD/SDI. that will let you uprez SD analog if you set up the IO in front of the kona.

IO works nicely and plays well with kona. the converters work too. depends what you personally like.
