K2 and what all else?
Posted by Chris Poisson on May 13, 2005 at 5:19 pmI have a Beta SP machine, If I go to K2, (currently using DecklinkSP) I will need some kind of analog-SDI converter, is the AJA kbox sufficient, or will I want an Io, Multibridge or what? Can’t beat the price of the kbox.
Running FCP4.5 on G5 2gig dual.

Since you have the Decklink, I assume you have the computer, drives, monitors, etc.

May 13, 2005 at 10:02 pmthe 2Ghz mac you have will work great. alot of times, people using the huge scsi from the SD world have the ul3d, not the UL4D which will give you the best scsi performance and is necessary for HD. if you wish to upconvert analog SD, the full IO is needed, but if you just want to ingest, then the IOLA is perfect.

Could you please explain why the full Io if I want to upconvert? Could I also us a Multibridge? I do have a Huge Media vault, and a UL3D, which I would have to change I guess.

May 13, 2005 at 11:14 pmthe kona 2 takes in hd-sdi, sdi or dual link hd. an IO would do the trick. the IO has everything in and everything out, so analog to sdi is one of the many functions you can set it up as a stand alone in fron tof the kona 2. i have not paid too much attention to the other product, is it shipping AND working? if they can get you analog to sdi and you feel comfortable, go for it.
you can keep the ul3d, just when you work with uncompressed, you will notice you are bumping your head. it chokes the bandwidth now available and necessary with the ul4d, you will think you have a whole new drive. if you are working compressed DVCPRO HD, the ul3d will make no difference.

May 14, 2005 at 12:07 amHey gang,
This is all great input, perhaps I should have included a little more info. I’m thinking about moving the Decklink SP to my other machine or just brooming it, and adding the Kona2 to the G5 in anticipation on HD work, and still doing SD work from and to my Beta SP machine. So I’m looking for suggestions for the best hardware to go along with the K2. Does that make sense?

May 14, 2005 at 2:36 amDoes the UL4D show a significant performance advantage when the RAID is U160 or just with U320 drives?

May 14, 2005 at 4:25 pmThe UL4D card will do nothing for U160 drives, however, you will get full performance with U320 drives from the UL4D.
However, in this day and age, few are buying big SCSI arrays with U320 drives.
The HUGE Media Vault with the old UL3D will work just fine and dandy for 8 and 10 bit SDI, and DVCPro HD. You will only have to change to a faster drive array for uncompressed HD. And if you are crazy, and have lots of money to burn, remember that the old Kona HD cards (not the Kona 2) worked every day doing uncomrpessed HD with the UL3D and 8 SCSI drives striped together at RAID 0.
But for doing the Component Beta work, just get the AJA IO LA. The Blackmagic Multibridge will be great when it if finally released, but as many of you know, there are issues in manufacturing with the input stage right now, and that is why it’s not shipping. But it will be amazing once it’s released. If you have to get to work RIGHT NOW – just get the AJA I/O LA. It’s a great unit.

For drives, I’m really loving FibreChannel for both their speed and the flexibility of locating the units up to 100 feet away from the computer. I’m running the Medea FCR2X (2TB) and they are plenty fast enough for 10bit HD. At the moment I’m running the Apple FibreChannel card which only has copper connections, though shortly I’ll be adding an ATTO Celerity card to both of the FCP units to switch over to fiber optic connections.
I just received a SATA drive unit from LaCie which I’ll be testing in about two weeks for a review here on the Cow and the speed test they sent me looked impressive so we’ll see how that goes.
For a monitor, Sony PVM20L5/1 is still the way to go if you get one soon before they’re gone. I use that for all color correction and then I put a 42″ Vizio Plasma Display on the wall for pretty picture for the clients. It takes the Component output from the Sony.
Also, the K2 and the Decklink SP will work together so there’s no reason to completely get rid of it if you have a second machine. I run the Aurora PipePro in my second suite and projects move back and forth between the two rooms seamlessly.
