CHEAPEST/BEST COMPONENT INPUT SCENARIO for KONA 2
Posted by Jim Blokland on May 10, 2005 at 2:23 amHello:
I’m trying to figure out the best/least expensive way to get a component analog signal (from Beta SP) into my KONA 2 set-up.
Seems the cheapest way is to use a Decklink SP card. Questions: can I have a Decklink card installed on the same system as my Kona 2 card? Can they peacefully co-exist on the same machine? Can the Kona 2 playback whatever codec the Decklink uses and output a component signal from the K-Box for layback to BetaSP (or perhaps I would just use the Decklink card, if I’m staying in SD…)?
I’m also considering the IO LA, but it’s twice the price. And the converter scenario is ungainly (is that a word?) and pricey too.
Thanks in advance for any insight.
Best, JIM.

May 10, 2005 at 2:50 amSo, if you spend $500 more, and we absolutely guarantee that it will work for you, are you basically saying that you cannot generate the revenue to pay for this “extra cost” in one or two days? Because I can assure you that the right thing to do is to get the AJA I/O LA. You obviously have a project that requires Beta footage, and you obviously own a Beta VTR? Is is possible that you will earn less than $500 profit from doing this project?

May 10, 2005 at 3:10 amwell, since you did ask for the best, the AJA IOLA is 10 bit in and OUT, not eight bit as the cheapest things on the market tend to be. most people find it necessary…but the cheapest way to get video into your machine is probably a firewire ADS pyro, but that would hardly be the best. the internet is a big space, but i imagine the amount of the people with kona 2 and a decklink SP card are remarkably few.

Thanks for your responses. I realize it is folly to put ‘cheapest/best’ in the same subject line, let alone the same breath… : > )
So Bob, you don’t recommend putting these two cards in the same computer. Thanks for that info. I suspected as much. I have a few concerns regarding the IO LA and firewire solutions in general, mostly the latency issue. I admit, I am trying to minimize the cost of dealing with ‘legacy’ materials like Beta SP, especially with the continuing migration to HD — but I still have a number of corporate clients that shoot on Beta SP.
One last question, would the KONA LS work as an alternate solution? Can I fit that card in with a KONA 2 and a SATA card?
Thanks in advance.

As it has been written before me -No-
You cannot use the Kona LS either, the only way to do this is using an IO as the capture device. you comments on latency are not vaild if you use the IO for capture and the K2 for playback. Also the FW latency on the Io will be less than the current 5 frames with the next release (for FCP5) as announced at NAB.
I too am with BoB on the comment about getting paid. Saving a “days” pay that may require more than that much time in trying to configure.

Consider using AJA’s D10AD component to SDI converter along with a flying cow audio converter.

Absolutely. I’ll second Bob and Gary on this one, Io LA is the way to go for Component input with a K2 system. The best thing about the Io is that it’s an external box and you can move it from system to system. In my case, we have two suites plus a mobile system so the ability to move a box around to the system which needs the Analog input at that moment is extremely helpful which is why whenever we actually need an analog source again, I’ll pick up the LA that very day.

May 10, 2005 at 11:00 pmTony beat me to it. I’d suggest the same thing. In our main edit suite, we’re using a Kona2+Kbox solution, but for the old Beta SP standby that will never go away, we can either use our AJA iO (big version) or our trusted-tried-and-true AJA D10A 10-bit YUV to SDI converter with the Kona 2. The beauty is that these little things are swappable and portable. I’ve been using these AJA converters since my first acquisition of our original Kona SD a few years ago (which is still here too BTW). AJA hardware is top-notch. Always has been, always will be.
Just run a few 1′ BNC cables from the deck to the converter, then run a long single SDI cable from the converter to your K2. Neat and tidy. No fuss. All 10-bit. Beautiful. End of story!

May 11, 2005 at 1:07 amThanks all for the feedback.
Seems to me the IO LA is the best deal — marginally cheaper than the Flying Cow and AJA converter box, portable, cleaner single firewire connect, and low(er) latency if used for playout.
Just wish my KONA 2 came with analog inputs, then I wouldn’t be singing this song!
Best, JIM.

May 11, 2005 at 1:26 amJim one thing I did over a year ago was to purchase a Sony J3/902 for all my Beta playback via SDI. BetaSP was pretty much the only thing left for me to worry about Component inputs so by purchasing the deck for a client who shoots all DigiBeta. I’ve found even my BetaSP looks better playing down SDI than Component. It’s a player only, but has been a great investment in our shop.

May 11, 2005 at 1:50 amOoooops! I always forget about the audio! I have everything routed to a Tascam DM24 digital mixer so its got all the analog and digital I/O there that I could ever need. So yeah, you’d need a Flying Cow or something. Looks like the AJA iO LA is your best bet.
Stupid audio, stupid audio!
