There’s only one FW buss in a Mac. There may be multiple ports, but only one controller. That means that sometimes with two or more devices connected, the buss will choke. While this happens more often when two different devices like a camera and drive are connected, I’ve also seen it happen with just two drives. It probably has to do with the FW chipsets being used somehow not being compatible. Try unhooking the drives one-at-a-time and see if the problem clears up. Maybe hooking them up in a different order may help. If you can move the files using the Finder, but not in FCP, then trash FCP prefs and repair permissions. Perhaps, that will help.

Your graphics card’s GPU can also make a difference in render times. Certain effects like FXPlug use the GPU as does Motion & Color. I’m not up on the current “best,” but the ATI 4870 is very good.

I believe (someone please correct me if I’m wrong) that DVCProHD 720P60 runs at 100mbps. That would convert to 12.5Mbps. As you’re only reading the disk at 12.3Mbps, that could be your problem. I’m fairly certain a G-Raid should run faster than that. Try archiving all the media on your drive then reformat it and test it again. You should see a higher data rate. Are you using FW800?

If you just want to rename clips, you can do that in the L&T Clip Name field. And, if you name the folders holding each P2 card appropriately, like Cow Shoot-date-1, 2…, that will appear as Reel info in L&T.

Have you discussed this approach with the celebrity? Does he or she understand what you’re asking him/her to do? This sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. I’ve worked with a lot of celebrities and none of them would want to be responsible the technical side of a recording session. That’s not what they do. And when you run into problems during the session, they are likely to get frustrated and “unhappy” with you. You need a very good phone patch at the talent end and a mixer capable of feeding your comments into talent’s headphones and sending his/her audio down the line to you and at the same time to a recorder. At the least do what Sam suggests, or find a VO studio in the talent’s area and do it from there. Everyone will be happier.

I’ve edited DVCProHD 720PN24 on a similar system using FCP 5.1.4. The only difference was I used a tapeless workflow. P2 cards copied to hard drive then imported. I don’t remember the exact import method. That was a while ago. It was called something other than Log & Transfer which is how it’s done in FCP 6 & 7. I didn’t have any problems. Make sure your sequence settings exactly match your clip parameters. It’s best to use the appropriate Easy Setup as that will do the setup for you. Also check your drives with the AJA System Test. You can download it from aja.com. If your drives are slow or over half-full that might cause the problem. BTW, how are you monitoring the video?
