P2 720p60 import to FCP 5.1.4
Hello all,
For the first time, I’ve unknowingly shot HD material with the AG-HPX500P. So far, I’ve not found a workflow/settings combination that allows the imported clips to play in Viewer or Timeline windows of Final Cut Pro.
One or 2 frames will intitially play, then lock up, and audio will continue underneath.
To begin, I opened a new project, named it, then made Audio/Video settings DVCPRO HD – 720p60 (sequence preset, capture preset) and made Device Control Preset ‘DVCPRO HD FireWire’, as that is how the video is coming from camera (PC mode, using File – Import – Panasonic P2) to laptop.
Am I on the right track here? I see some concerns posted in the forum re the earlier FCP 5.0.x and P2 HD, so it might be I’ve run up against similar limits in 5.1.4
The problem appears to persist regardless of clip length – a short as 6 seconds, and as long as 27 minutes.

I’ve edited DVCProHD 720PN24 on a similar system using FCP 5.1.4. The only difference was I used a tapeless workflow. P2 cards copied to hard drive then imported. I don’t remember the exact import method. That was a while ago. It was called something other than Log & Transfer which is how it’s done in FCP 6 & 7. I didn’t have any problems. Make sure your sequence settings exactly match your clip parameters. It’s best to use the appropriate Easy Setup as that will do the setup for you. Also check your drives with the AJA System Test. You can download it from aja.com. If your drives are slow or over half-full that might cause the problem. BTW, how are you monitoring the video?

I downloaded and ran the AJA test, but I have not been able to find any interpretation of the results(?). For Disk Read/Write, frame size DVCProHD 720p60, file size 512 MB, I got Write @ 19.7 MB/s, and Read @ 12.3 MB/s.
I found the G-RAID drive to be aprox 2/3 full, so am laying off video overnight, and will try import again tomorrow.
Monitoring of video is just happening within FCP’s standard edit windows, meaning there really isn’t monitoring during the ingest process. Should this change?
By the way, for my purposes, this project would be just fine if edited in SD, but I haven’t yet seen any way to downconvert as you conduct an import-type function into FCP (in P2, I have the HPX-500P and HPG-20). It would seem that FireWire, for all it’s convenience, is not a system that will allow for changes like this.

I believe (someone please correct me if I’m wrong) that DVCProHD 720P60 runs at 100mbps. That would convert to 12.5Mbps. As you’re only reading the disk at 12.3Mbps, that could be your problem. I’m fairly certain a G-Raid should run faster than that. Try archiving all the media on your drive then reformat it and test it again. You should see a higher data rate. Are you using FW800?
