H.264 or PhotoJPEG are codecs (which means compression-decompression). Codecs instruct the program how to encode and decode a clip. mpeg-4 and mov are containers. They hold a codec. You can setup a mov to hold an h.264 codec or a dv codec or whatever. If you use Compressor you can setup these choices in the Inspector. The Encoder tab lets you spec Video and Audio settings and Frame Controls can be used to improve (in some cases) the quality of the output. There’s also a Geometry tab to set the frame size. Compressor is a powerful and, therefore, somewhat involved app. If you search here and the Compression Techniques forum you’ll find lots of information. AFAIK, standard black burst will work for 29.97 and, I guess, 59.94. Tri-level sync comes into play for 23.976 material. The AJA Gen10 can produce both black burst and tri-level aync at an excellent price. Many people suggest looping the ref video to the composite video in of a BVW1800. I’ve not heard if it helps with other Beta decks. If you search for Bob Zelin and Gen10, you’ll find more specific info from someone who really knows tech.

In Applications go to the Utility Folder. In there find Disk Utility. Start it and when the app opens, select your system drive and click Repair. There’s no point in doing a verify first as if you need repair you’ll have to click Repair anyway. That’s it. Here’s some info from Apple re Repair Permissions.

Try this advice from Jeremy Garchow, “First, delete the new mix out of FCP and your timeline. Set FCP up in a 23.98 easy setup, then quit FCP. Now reopen FCP and reimport your new mix.” This has worked for others.

The 2600 is a good card, but the 4870 is faster and has more memory. I haven’t seen any speed comparisons, though. And while there would be some render enhancements, I dont know how much.

Try to describe the glitches. Can you post an example? How big are the graphics you inserted? What do you mean by text files? Be careful not to leave blank spaces in your timeline. Fill them with slugs, especially between clips with sync sound. What version FCP are you using? Describe your computer including your drives. All of that info helps folks help you.
