I am ingesting Beta material through a Kona 3 and upconverting to ProRess 422 1820x1080i. Do I need a tri-synch blackburst generator or can I use a “standard” one? I have access to a little Horito unit, not at the studio so forget the model number, but I am positive that it is not tri-synch.

You only need tri level sync to master to 23.98. If you are working 1080i/59.94 (29.97fps) you can just use a “regular” black generator.

AFAIK, standard black burst will work for 29.97 and, I guess, 59.94. Tri-level sync comes into play for 23.976 material. The AJA Gen10 can produce both black burst and tri-level aync at an excellent price. Many people suggest looping the ref video to the composite video in of a BVW1800. I’ve not heard if it helps with other Beta decks. If you search for Bob Zelin and Gen10, you’ll find more specific info from someone who really knows tech.

if you have the Horita BSG-50 (not BG-50), it will work just fine for your application, as long as you have the TERMINATION switches set to ON on your VTR. If your Beta VTR (and your AJA kona breakout box looping input) are not terminated (75 ohm on), then the horita will appear to not work. And if you do not set your AJA Control Panel CONTROL tab to EXT REF (or REF Vid – whatever it’s called) it will not work.

Thanks everyone. I will give it a go once I get into the studio tomorrow.

Pardon me for a slight hi-jack of this thread but can cards like the Konas and Matrox boxes run without burst? What are the implications?

If you capture or layback to tape, not having ref video will lead to a host of potential problems. Even without going to or from tape, lack of ref video can cause audio issues like crackling and popping.
