All normalizing does is raise the gain of the entire audio track until the loudest point is just below the clipping point (where sound will distort). As mentioned, it does not even out the audio levels. Levelator will do that, but IMHO it is very heavy-handed. You can use it in a pinch, but if you want to get your audio “right” learn and work in STP.

Disk Warrior has saved my butt any number of times. And, 100GB free on a 2TB drive is not enough free space. Drive performance starts to degrade as soon as you approach half-full. While I don’t think this would lead to your connect issues, it can affect playback quality.

The Panasonic USB P2 reader is not that expensive. And a big advantage is you can use it with a laptop or desktop system. We’ve been using the Duel for years without a problem, but those times we need to off-load a card in the studio we have to drag out the laptop, hook up the Duel and a drive, then move the drive over to the edit system. It’s a pain! With the reader, you just plug it into 2 USB ports and you’re good to go. And, I believe I’ve read it’s a lot faster than the Duel. We’ll be adding one soon.

If your project is associated with NYU, then you may have access to one of the most state-of-the-art sound facilities on the planet, the James Dolan Recording/Teaching Complex at NYU’s Steinhardt School of Music and Performing Arts Professions. There’s an issue in FCP 7 that didn’t exist (I think) in FCP 6. If there’s a gap between clips, the audio & video will become un-synced. If you fill the gaps (and that means at the program start, too) the sync is good. Try adding slugs and see if it helps.

Using distort (and possibly scaling) is probably the easiest way. Of course, this clip is probably SD and may not match your other HD clips. You might try doing the distort in Compressor and turn on Frame Controls and use the highest-quality setting for re-sizing. Compressor will do a better job of scaling than FCP. If the frame rates and/or codecs are different, then change that, too, in Compressor. For changing frame rates choose the highest-quality (in Frame Controls) for rate conversion.
