It shouldn’t be merging the layers. Have you tried deleting your preferences or restarting? What happens if you bring it in as “Composition-cropped layers”? Does it still merge the layers?

Use the Import as “Composition” not “Composition-Cropped Layers” function. This will create each layer at the frame aspect ratio of your Photoshop document. You won’t need to drop them into another comp this way either, because this creates a new comp containing all of the Photoshop layers.

Okay, your problem is that the file you are trying to use is not prepared correctly. I guess you either received it like this or imported this layer from Photoshop. Either way, you need to “recreate” this logo in Illustrator so that it is in “vector” form (made of paths). Maybe your client can provide an EPS file for you to use…

In the 3D Invigorator Setup window (on the small object tab) there is a button for USER PREFS; click on that and you’ll find a SHADOW QUALITY setting. Try increasing this and see if it helps.

It doesn’t matter what effect you use to get your gradient, as long as you create the gradient in the precomp. You then use that precomp in your main comp where you apply the compound blur effect to your footage and choose the precomp as the blur layer. If you don’t precompose compound blur won’t recognize the gradient effect and you’ll get an all over blur.

Is the gradient you are using created using the Ramp effect? If so you need to precompose the blur layer with the Ramp effect before you can use it. You may like to take a screen shot including your effect controls panel and email it to me john.dickinson@foxtel.com.au
