The gradient is just another layer in your comp. Choose that layer as your blur map from within the Compound Blur effect properties. One thing to keep in mind is that if you apply any effects to this gradient layer, you must precompose the layer before those effects will be recognised by the effect.

The Compound Blur effect blurs pixels in the selected layer based on the luminance values of a blur layer, also known as a blurring map. The blur layer, which can be any layer that contains pixels of different luminance values, is essentially overlaid on top of the selected layer, and the pixels of both layers are matched, one to one. Where the blur layer is black, no blurring occurs in the same location in the selected layer. The blur layer is used only as a map; it is not visible in the composition.
Blur Layer specifies the layer in the composition to use as the blurring map. Bright values in the blur layer correspond to more blurring of the affected layer, while dark values correspond to less blurring. Maximum Blur specifies the maximum amount, in pixels, that any part of the affected layer can be blurred. Stretch Map to Fit stretches the blur layer to the dimensions of the layer to which it is applied; otherwise, it is centered. Invert Blur inverts the values, so areas that were previously more blurred are less blurred, and vice versa.

Take a look at the Compound Blur effect. Very good for faking depth of field.

There are a couple of ways to achieve this:
1. Use the Ramp Effect (EFFECT > GENERATE > RAMP). This is only a two color gradient.
2. Make the text 3D and use a colored light.
3. Use a plugin like Zaxwerks “The Works Vol 1” which has a great gradient effect.JD

How about Compound blur? It uses another layer (including a gradient) to control the amount of blur applied. Lens blur is now part of AE7.

Yes there is an expression editor in the new Graph Editor. Also, changing the name of an item referenced in an expression will no longer break the expression, it will update to reflect the change automatically.

Hi Mark,
It starts out with great potential. The 3D ident at the top is top notch (watch out using too much Shine though) and the toon animation that follows is great. The next “Spoutnik” clip is a bit long with not much happening and seems to slow the whole thing down. What’s the deal with the car carrier shot… what graphics did you do there? Also, the second time we see it, later in the reel it cuts to the back of the truck but in that shot it looks like you’ve accidentally cropped the left side off… The breakdown of the toon shot is a good thing (I do this in my reel) but it all happened so quickly I wasn’t sure what I was meant to be seeing even though you put text at the bottom. I find wipe transitions are a good tool, for example, wiping from the green screen version to the comped version, for helping the viewer understand what was done in the shot.I like the track you used and felt the whole thing needed to be edited a bit tighter to the track, having said that, I know it’s not easy when you don’t have much content. All in all a great effort!
