I think everyone will respond that it’s done using real white ink or paint splattered on a black surface and keyed, or poured into an aquarium full of water.

Yeah, Shatter is definitely one of my favorite plug-ins. I use it a lot. (Maybe too much!) It’s pretty tricky though. Lots of settings. You have to have time to fiddle with it to get what you want. The cool thing though is how many different things you can do with it. That tutorial here by Roland Kahlenberg shows how you can make a 3D logo with it. Pretty cool. Experiment with it when you get the time.

    Try animating the radius too.

Those spots are bad. While it is a cool effect, I personally think it’s VERY inappropriate for an investment company. It comes across as them trying really hard to look “hip.”

I think the only way to do it is to reverse playback of the layer–Ctrl/Cmnd + Alt/Option + R. Worked good for me.

Hey thanks Brian. Yeah, Viscosity was what I was overlooking. I think because it’s such a big word I was afraid of it. 🙂

  • Yes. VERY useful. Thanks.

One thing that kept getting me was that you have to precompose the layer WITH the animation, then apply ECHO to the precomp. Also, when scrubbing the Time setting, I hold down the ALT button because usually it only requires a small increment change to see results. Anyone else?

    HTH.

    What about using Effects>Time>Echo?

Try right-clicking on the keyframes and choose KEYFRAME INTERPOLATION and change SPACIAL INTERPOLATION to LINEAR.
