I know many of you want to ask how the Charles Schwab spots are done (the ones that look like the movie “Waking Life”) and before you ask, search the archives for posts concerning the techniques used to make that movie. That will get you started…then go to Google and search for “how they made Waking Life” and that will get you more on the subject.

They are very cool, a ton of work, and a lot harder to pull off than it looks. Oh, and, no, there isn’t a single plugin that will magically make your footage look like those spots. You and your underlings will have to put into plenty of those “extra hours” to pull off a convincing look-alike.

    Happy searching.

Just how DO I get those lovely light rays shining through my text like in ALL the movie trailers and the mcdonalds ad?

Oh, and tell me how to add more lens flares to my graphics, they look SOOO cool!

And please tell me how to get this keylight and CC Effects I can’t seem to find them in the menus.

What’s the best system for running AE?

    What are your favourite plugins?

My text is just a flat plane, I pushed the 3d button, but it doesn’t have any depth!?!?!?!?!? How do I make it really 3d?

Shatter starts on the layer right away, I want to delay it some…how?

The text to dust tutorial is confusing me.

    Ayoto doesn’t speak English.

Do my work for me in a tutorial!!!

Those spots are bad. While it is a cool effect, I personally think it’s VERY inappropriate for an investment company. It comes across as them trying really hard to look “hip.”

They’re by Bob Sabiston, who’s the guy who did the same thing for waking life. And while there’s not a plugin solution (you need a firm grasp of animation technique), he is aided by Rotoshop, the software he designed for the task (and may one day release).

Illustrator has a vectorize ability now, I saw it here on a Cow video that looks very nice. I’d give that a try on a video converted to an image sequence. It’s worth a try.
