affect speed of Shatter?
Posted by Neil Harris on October 7, 2005 at 9:37 amhi there,
i’m using the Shatter Plug in and am trying to slow down the rate at which it shatters the layer so this happens over 20 secs instead of 1 sec. anyone know how to do this?
sorry this is such a lazy question but i’ve got to turn this around pretty quick…
cheers!
Neil

October 7, 2005 at 10:00 amHi.
I just got a nice slow motion effect by changing two simple values: Force Strength and Gravity.
With a Strength of .65 and a Gravity of 0,05 you’ll probably get a nice 20 second effect.

October 7, 2005 at 12:38 pmHow about a more violent shatter? It seems that no matter what I try, I can’t get the particles to really go *pow* at the beginning.

October 7, 2005 at 1:42 pmRaise (or lower?) the viscosity setting. That gives you a big hit, but then friction builds up quickly and the shards slow down fast.

October 7, 2005 at 2:06 pmthose changes have worked ok but everything seems to slow to a halt pretty soon after the ‘explosion’ it worked be great if they just continued on as though it were a super slo mo shatter of a window pane.
anyway – i’ll have a better look when i’ve got more time.
i’m pretty impressed though by the plug in, especially being able to view it through comp camera. does anyone else do shatter plug ins that work in 3D?

October 7, 2005 at 2:28 pmYeah, Shatter is definitely one of my favorite plug-ins. I use it a lot. (Maybe too much!) It’s pretty tricky though. Lots of settings. You have to have time to fiddle with it to get what you want. The cool thing though is how many different things you can do with it. That tutorial here by Roland Kahlenberg shows how you can make a 3D logo with it. Pretty cool. Experiment with it when you get the time.

October 7, 2005 at 2:58 pmYeah, the 3d logo is a great idea, but still it’s an indirect way to do an easier task than the one that was primarily designed for the plugin. It’s kind of weird that there’s no plugin included in AE yet for a simple extrude like that.
Clint Fleckenstein, viscosity set to 0 and a high strength in the force are violent enough for me =)

October 7, 2005 at 4:24 pmcould you not just render it out slow (or as best you can get it) and then use time remapping to speed up the first few frames.

October 7, 2005 at 4:34 pmIf you’re going to do it that way, set your comp settings to 99 FPS (The highest frame rate you can have in AE*. Render it, import it, Then time remap.
* If you have footage at higher than 99 FPS, and you drop that footage on the create comp icon, the comp will be created at the same frame rate as the footage.

October 7, 2005 at 4:56 pmAs far as I know, that’s not necessary. With animated properties in AE you don’t need to do that, frames inbetween get interpolated in the final composition. Still, what you say would be good for placing keyframes with more detail or, say, time resolution.
