The Meyers’ book is an excellent resource but don’t try to go through it too quickly. Take your time and really absorb the material in one section before moving on to the next.
Antony Bolante’s Visual QuickPro Guide is useful for looking up specific techniques but is not really a beginner-friendly tutorial.
The books from Lynda.com are pretty good for beginners but I haven’t seen the one for After Effects.
I don’t particularly like the After Effects CIB as it confuses a lot of beginners.

Are you interpreting the alpha channel from Motion correctly? Premulitplied with Black when importing into AE.

Vitaminman had most of the steps correct, but here are a couple of other things:
1. To select all the keyframes for a property, click on the name of the property. To select all the Opacity keyframes, click on the word OPACITY.
2. You can copy all the selected keyframes by pressing command (mac) / control (win) – C.
3. Make sure the current time indicator is parked on the frame where you want the first keyframe to be pasted. Select the correct layer and press command/control – V to paste.

Yes. The keyframe interpolation methods for acceleration and deceleration are called EASY EASE. You EASE IN to slow down, EASE OUT to speed up, and EASY EASE to do both (middle keyframes).
Select the keyframes and choose the appropriate method from the Keyframe Assistant in the Animation menu. You can also right-click on the keyframe to access the shortcut menu.

Ron, absolutely right.
The wonderful thing about digital manipulation is how many tools are readily available to the artist. Downside is, one can’t always figure out techniques easily. I’ve been using Adobe tools since 1994 and still consider myself just a student–there’s always so much to learn no matter how much you already know.
That’s why resources like the COW and user groups are so useful. Give some, get some.
