John, I agree, there SHOULD be no need. I know it was never needed when I used to edit in dv-avi and HDV. But with the Canon footage (5D & 7D), it is definitely needed to unselect sampling when slowing down events. Awful ghosting occurs otherwise. Maybe it’s because of the Canon compression.

Paul, you can set 5D 1080 24p footage slower, just not too much, maybe up to 50%. However, you will get much better results if you set the switch to “Disable Resample”. This is likely the cause of most of the ghosting. You can do this per event, or select multiple events and use the “Disable resample” (not sure if this was installed or obtained later.

These weird type of issues are often due to an installation of something you don’t even remember doing. Usually some sort of driver interaction. Not sure if you tried to uninstall the nvidia driver and reinstall. Also you can try to boot in safe-mode and see if Vegas still crashes, and if not then it’s probably driver related. Finding a bad driver is difficult.

  • When you update Nvidia drivers, do it from their website, do not use the driver from the MS update, it is bad.

No, don’t use the MS update for the Nvidia drivers, they are bad. Go to the Nvida website, have it detect and update the driver. I had a similar problem with the MS one, was all OK after Nvidia updated it.

  • I usually use the legacy text with no issues. I do remember using the new one by accident and it did crash, i didnt even know they made a new text tool. But now since I updated to the latest build it hasn’t crashed. So be sure you are at the latest build for V11, and if still crashes, try the legacy text.

  • The quality of playback in Vegas is predominately based on a fast CPU, even with CUDA GPU acceleration. It doesn’t even care so much about SSD vs. some other hard drive interface (I have SSD, and not much difference between SATA & even USB, believe it or not).

I have the Core I7 3930k CPU with Win7, and it handles raw AVCHD well. I also have the GTX570 GPU and based on my rough tests, it does improve playback, but is only noticeable when doing multi-cam with 3-4 streams. Playback studders a bit on new events, around 10-20fps, then smooths out to 24fps. If I disable GPU acceleration it crawls at around 5-10fps.

Also, the key is to go to the NVIDIA website and have it detect your card and current driver and upgrade from there. The Win7 update gets it all wrong for that card.

John: “Finally, make sure that you open each nested project separately before you import it and clean the media pool so that there are no missing files that aren’t being used. This will cause nested imports to fail.”

This is KEY! Vegas doesn’t seem to be able to know what the problem is when files are missing in the veg that is being nested. Gets me every time.

Try to open another instance of Vegas, copy all events from the crashing one into the new one. You won’t get effects set in tracks, but this sometimes fixes errant bugs that cause hangs and crashes.
