  • 5D Footage choppy?? What am I doing wrong???

Posted by Paul Gilmore on May 9, 2012 at 9:47 pm

Alright well I wanted to try out the Cannon 5D and 7D for a wedding. I have the footage on my computer. All the files are .MOV and shot at 24fps and 1080p. I just started editing the footage and all looks great until I add some slow motion and the footage looks very (excuse me but I’m not sure what the tech word is) but looks choppy or fluttery for lack of a better word. I called up my brother who uses those cameras all the time and he said I need to adjust the frame rate to 23 or 24fps and use 720p. I tried that setting out and I’m still have this issue. For those who have used 5D and/or 7D what setting works best for editing footage and using slow motion? or is there a certain plugin to use for it?? Any help will be GREATLY appreciated!

    Thanks a bunch guys
    Paul

here is a picture of my settings… what do I need to switch them to?
I’m sure they are not set correctly for high rez 5D footage

Slow motion from 24 fps footage will have ghosting artifacts because Vegas is trying to fill in the missing frames. Twixtor is a plugin you can use (I’ve never used it) that seems to work well for people, and it will make slow motion footage for you. But you should shoot at 30 fps or higher to get slow motion.

Hmm so that is why when I use slow motion on footage shot by my FX7 works great becusse it’s shooting at a higher frame rate then the 5D? So if I plan on using slo mo I need to set the 5D to a higher frame rate. I haven’t looked at the plugin you suggested yet, do you happen to know if it’s free?

No, you have to buy it, though I’m pretty sure they offer a free trial.

    Yes well,

This does not happen with latest updates to Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 11 and using the a GPU accelerated Video Card.(This program is very similar to Pro 11 However, try setting Full resolution to BEST and No Motion Blur. The 11 version handles H.264 mov at 1920 x 1080p extremely well , maybe faster than Premiere Pro CS5.5.2 but, I am 25 fps PAL ?

Good luck, download trial upgrade if you can

ha yeah read my other post about pro 11 https://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/24/948450

so that aint happening… I’ll try out that plugin and try editing or rendering it under a different frame rate see if that helps

If you downloaded the trial it may have been corrupted, try again. I agree with you on David Lean, Dr Zhivago, perhaps.

Been using Sony Vegas PLATINUM 11 for 6 months mainly for stablizer, try Build 322, trialed 11 Pro, did everything I asked of it , but, no better than sibling. but, I was a Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5.1 user now CS5.5.2 everything runs fine, but, very impressed with H.264mov files from our Canon 5D Mark II running in Sony, perhaps faster than CS5.5.2 but, interface not as good, perhaps I have got use to Adobe.

    Angelo may be right ?

[Paul Gilmore] “here is a picture of my settings… what do I need to switch them to?”

You need to switch them to match your source video. What you are doing now is asking Vegas to convert 1080i to 480p “on-the-fly” as it plays back on the timeline and that’s very difficult to do. If you make your project match your source video you will have a much easier time editing. Then you can render to 480p for your final delivery.

Paul, you can set 5D 1080 24p footage slower, just not too much, maybe up to 50%. However, you will get much better results if you set the switch to “Disable Resample”. This is likely the cause of most of the ghosting. You can do this per event, or select multiple events and use the “Disable resample” (not sure if this was installed or obtained later.

Good advice Jim & Paul, I must be lucky with the set up here at 25 fps and PAL on the new computer I have now.
