Love the small footprint of the 170/200 for travel.

Why not go to a 2/3″ chip; something that would surpass the EX and be in line with what Scarlet is supposed to deliver?

Hey Santa, we’ve been good 🙂

    Jeremy

Pretty much a one man shop. (HVX200,V1U,D30 FCS2-Kona3, CS3, AJA IOLA for SD Laptop) Up til now I’ve been archiving P2 to Blu-ray, and assigning each client TB drives to keep whole projects on (Camera originals, GFX, Motion, LT etc).
I know that I can redig/reload tapes/discs, but having it all in one place is faster/better. (Clients often request segments from programs as much as 3 years back…”and can we have that tomorrow please”) But, as we all know drives will fail, and even TB drives are starting to take up a lot of room. Inexpensive drives were only meant to be a temporary solution. And when you start talking about RAID back up systems over 8 to 16 TB, they are no longer that cheap. It’s getting to the point were something more comprehensive is necessary.

At NAB, Cache-A was promising MXF aware systems at about $8K. (Although that MXF aware might still be vaporware, and at an additional price.) They seemed to be selling a plug and play system with a self contained standard filing structure. Still a bit pricey for a one man shop, but I haven’t seen anything else that I’m comfortable with.

With R3D and SxS in my immediate future, the data storage situation is only going to get more critical. So, any insights would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,

I just did this a few days ago w/ the 200 In the Camera Setup menu there are three choices Normal, Letterbox & Squeeze. My original thought was to select letterbox. However, we ultimately went to the Squeeze setting, then in editing used the DV anamorphic. The Squeeze setting in the camera monitor looks 16×9 not squished.

January 26, 2009 at 3:34 pm in reply to: 4Pin to 9Pin on NewMBP

I’ve had a little more time to play with it this morning, and was able to get it to work, but it’s very finicky. First I tried HDV to ProRez on a Sony V1U and had no luck on the new MBP (the older Intel MBP worked fine with the same settings, same cable). Then I tried a Panny HVX200 in DV mode with no success until I started reinitializing both the camera and the program, finally I got a successful communication link.

I went back to the V1U and after a few ons and offs was able to get both straight HDV and HDV to ProRez, but this is something that I wouldn’t want to have to do under the gun 🙂

I agree that the pin configuration from 9 to 4 should not be a problem. However, since the new MBP has an I/O problem with the Express slot working with eSata (at present it seem that only the new Sonnet card works reliably), I was concerned.

I will keep playing with this to see if I can come up with a less fumbling work-flow, and get back to you.

Thanks, as always, for your prompt and reassuring feedback.

January 17, 2009 at 2:01 pm in reply to: LED lightbars

    Charles,

I’ve been using one of the LED from Prompter People with reasonable results. Also,iW Blast TR – by Phillips is being used in some studios. I believe it is adjustable from 3200k to 6000k.

A light weight variable Kelvin instrument is of great interest to me. Hopefully we will see many versions at this years NAB.

As soon as I get more info, I will share it.

January 11, 2009 at 12:10 am in reply to: Quicktime Problems with WMV’s

I have noticed a bit of early truncating at the beginning and end of WMVs. I’ve taken to adding at least a half second of black to the beginning and end of my sequences. I find that this approach seems to work better for playback.

September 30, 2008 at 2:07 pm in reply to: HDV ‘live’ capture now

It’s been a while since I’ve done this, but as I recall I had to start recording to tape first, then hit the Record Now.

I should be able to check this later today and get back to you.

    Jeremy,

Thanks for the link to the AVC codec. I got hold of the camera yesterday, recorded avc intra 100, and brought it into FCS2 as ProRez. It looks great.

Drag video file and drop onto 5 dot square. It will turn back as video is loaded. Go to File and chose format. (ie quicktime) A new window will open. Select from drop down what format (make sure the quality is set to what you require – usually 100%). Hit make movie, give it a name and place to store and go.

    good luck,

July 19, 2008 at 3:49 pm in reply to: CC HDV-Kona3

    Dave,

Thanks for the response. Your explanation sounds perfectly logical.
And, if that is the case I should be able to move to an I frame and get a proper reading. (I’ll try that later & get back with results)

In the mean time, it strikes me as odd that no one else is trying to CC HDV and encountering this problem.

    Cheers,
